The cast, largely made up of unknowns, is sparkling.

The world of Pennyworth is a bloody, horny mess, and that's wonderful.

Pennyworth looks and feels like an amalgam of every great '60s spy series but with modern-day cinematic television sensibilities and, as a result, is incredibly watchable and likeable... much like Alfred himself.

For the most part, it's a stylish new addition to the DC universe, hitting the right notes with its story arc and action set pieces, helped along by what should be a star-making turn by Bannon in the lead role.

Plays out for fun and intensity pretty nice all its own.

As long as you aren't squeamish when it comes to disembowelments shown on screen, Pennyworth is one of the better DC Comics small screen offerings.

There's plenty of good on the show. It simply needs to focus a little more on what's working.

Another unnecessary attempt to squeeze more blood from the proverbial Batman stone.

Alfred Pennyworth deserves to have his history told, and Pennyworth gives the character the backstory he deserves.

The stories are fairly thin, but the look of the show and the charisma of Bannon and some of the supporting players cover for that for a while.

That combination may be the selling point in theory, but in practice it's kind of a drag - rather than amplifying or enriching each other, the straight-ahead drama and the comic contrivances cancel each other out.

Pennyworth is a fine prequel to Gotham, and there's more than enough storytelling room to get the full picture of the guy who we used to just know as Batman's butler.

Pennyworth plays out a bit like the Downton Abbey of Batman-adjacent dramas.

All in all, though, Pennyworth does the job. As the titular character, [Jack] Bannon is roguish and charming; his British accent reminds me of the GEICO gekko from those classic TV ads.

Pennyworth is a surprisingly engaging spy show, but it never earns its status as a dedicated prequel about one of the most well-known-and yet still vaguely mysterious-figures in the entire superhero canon.

One of the strangest, least justified comic adaptations yet. It's not awful. It's just..."why?"

The actual Batman connections in Pennyworth almost seem unnecessary, since the show has enough charm and period piece swagger to stand on its own as a dashing old school adventure.

Pennyworth establishes an admirable long-game and introduces a number of characters you'll grow attached to quite quickly.

As a dark action-adventure series, Pennyworth is passable at times, with occasionally exciting set pieces and an appealing lead character. As an addition to the Batman mythos, though, it's a complete waste.

It is the definition of a romp, and as long as it doesn't force battiness into the plot, it has the makings of a royal treat.
