Red Widow: Season 1 (2013)

Critic Consensus: Red Widow boasts a strong cast, but its outlandish premise and lackluster execution keep it from being anything but middle-of-the-road.

Critic Reviews for Red Widow Season 1

All Critics (30) | Top Critics (16)

All in all, it would take some really engrossing characters, snappy dialogue and dynamic plotting to overcome the nonsensical premise, but those have mysteriously gone missing as well.

Entertaining and engrossing.

Maybe 10 years ago, this soccer-mom-turned-drug-dealer premise would have been intriguing, but now we've been there and seen better.

The pilot is technically well made, the acting is adequate and yet the whole enterprise feels like too much work.

Mar 1, 2013 | Full Review…

If Red Widow were more psychologically twisty or more excessive and over-the-top, it could be more engaging. As it is, the show is ludicrous and not much fun.

The plotting is far too leisurely for an open-ended series.

The show's deliberate unfolding and Marta's slippery morality aren't precisely innovations, but they may lead somewhere we don't yet anticipate.

Mar 3, 2013 | Rating: 6/10 | Full Review…

There's no real chemistry between Mitchell and their children stand out as weak links, the mafia angle feels watered down for network TV, and none of the characters pop out as compelling individuals.

Mar 3, 2013 | Full Review…

Red Widow is a tough show to get a bead on; it's not good enough to become appointment viewing, but at the same time it's not so terrible that we wouldn't stick around for six more hours to see how it all wraps up.

Mar 3, 2013 | Full Review…

It's entirely possible that Red Widow could pick up steam, but if this unenthusiastic pilot is any indication of what's in store for future episodes, I think I'd rather just sit this one out for now.
