Kay V @RT25071612 11/15/2024 Liked the setting, the ambiance, and quality cinematography. The storyline wasn't predictable but was creative, meaningful and had depth. I liked the parallel of the personal stories of the characters along with the artistry and talent it takes to create a fine dining experience; the complexity of human emotions and stories with its details just as a chef creates his infamous special menu or think of what ingredients to choose for his masterpiece; it doesn't fit a box and not formulaic but may turn out into something new or sometimes wonderful. I like that it includes a variety of stories from people of all backgrounds and the way they seamlessly blend with the main characters own personal conflicts and struggles and how they grow from it. I am not a fan of the constant smoking or cursing-- I won't go to this movie to find out what's moral or not, so that's really besides the point. Sam Milby's character? definitely aggressive and abusive full of negative behaviors to fit the certain character they had in mind. the acting was believable. His character wasn't as stereotyped (though the repeated cursing was overdone, ok we get it he's an angry man who says the f word a lot) since they showed how his behaviors are are inlfuenced from a mental disability or personality disorder of some sort, maybe from the accident or by nature-- doesn't excuse his behavior as he ends up losing his title as head chef at the end. I liked the small redemption at the end for when he asks for a second chance (that of course he doesn't deserve-- but Ella doesn't do it for him but for herself), and the circle-back moment with the knife as a gift. Piolo Pascual's character: when he was playing the quiet, controlled, quality type of guy, yes he can be attractive. Understanding guy all the way to the end. He has his own story to tell (might be an interesting movie). His character though was more flat than Sam Milby's. It was just about his dream than Ella's, so Ella had to shine and choose her path. Someone else mentioned about the inappropriate touching and moves that takes away from his genuine motives and trustworthiness, maybe? Ella's character... hmm not much to say but that her character fit the storyline fine, along with the acting. Great acting, felt real, down to earth, real and believable. Liked that she got to choose her own path, to be where she felt at home and loved, and giving back to those around her; inspite of pressure to please a lover or an ex. faced with a tough choice-- to be where she feels at home and happy or to go somewhere unknown land to "follow her dreams and breakthrough to success." Whatever she decided to choose, she was able to shine as the head chef with more confidence than before. See more Read all reviews
