Not all jokes landed well, some a little more problematic than others, and it was surely not the kind of comedy I would settle for. The ending was unsatisfying, and at times the series felt a little too directionless. Go to Full Review

The main characters in Shafted are so cartoonishly buffoonish that we have no desire to watch them constantly get in their own way. Go to Full Review

3.5/5
Ultimately Shafted offers nothing new, but I think that’s fine; it’s not trying to tread new ground but to find a safer path through the knotty brambles that tend to trip up a lot of comedies with things on their minds about relationships and masculinity. Go to Full Review

Tiffany H @RT74920996 01/27/2025 Netflix's Shafted: A Missed Opportunity for Balanced Exploration Netflix's Shafted dives into gender dynamics and relationships with an ambitious premise, attempting to explore various perspectives in a way that feels timely and relevant. The show does cover a wide range of gender topics, and it does so in a fairly balanced way, giving airtime to both men and women as they navigate the complexities of modern relationships. However, for all its potential, Shafted struggles to deliver meaningful substance or direction. The most glaring issue lies in the lack of rationality and communication between the couples. The storylines often depict chaotic conflicts where the characters seem incapable of productive dialogue. While this may reflect some real-world dynamics, it quickly becomes frustrating to watch, as it offers little in terms of resolution or insight. Instead of unpacking the root causes of these issues, the show leaves viewers with a sense of disarray, as if the characters are destined to flounder in their misunderstandings indefinitely. One recurring theme is the perspective of the men, who are portrayed as consistently lost and totally unaware of their actions. While this could have been an opportunity to explore the reasons behind this disconnection, Shafted provides little moral or practical guidance for the audience. There’s no clear effort to dissect these behaviors or offer solutions, leaving viewers to question the purpose of showcasing such cluelessness without any payoff. Adding to the frustration is the "class" the characters are supposedly taking—a subplot that had the potential to serve as a framework for character growth or exploration of deeper themes. Instead, the class feels superficial and absurd, bordering on parody. It’s barely present in the storyline and comes across as utterly idiotic, offering nothing of value to the narrative. Overall, while Shafted tackles important gender topics and provides a window into various perspectives, it fails to tie these themes together in a meaningful way. The lack of rational communication, the aimlessness of the characters, and the absence of practical guidance or resolution make the show feel hollow. What could have been an insightful exploration of modern relationships ends up feeling like a missed opportunity, bogged down by shallow storytelling and frustrating character arcs. If you’re looking for a show that sparks meaningful conversations, Shafted might leave you confused and grasping at something to discuss. See more Read all reviews
