You know where Sleeper Cell is headed, but the payoff mixes dialogue and action brilliantly.
The action is intense in Sleeper Cell, and each episode includes at least one stunning moment of violence or betrayal. But character depth isn't sacrificed to keep the pace moving, and there are valuable calms between the storms.
Delivering just a few ideas meaty enough to chew on and only a couple sequences exciting enough to gasp at. It might be an event, but it's often uneventful.
Like last season, Showtime will blow the series out over eight consecutive nights, hoping for maximum impact and viewer interest. There's plenty of impact, all right, but it's still hard to forget it's a television screen you're looking at.
Surely suspenseful but also unevenly acted, prone to clunky speechmaking and somewhat gratuitous in its preoccupation with holy-warrior sexual hypocrisy.
It's all distasteful -- sensationalistic in a drab and flabby way.
As the strands come together, the story gains in tension and you want to know what happens next. Even if what happens next is the unthinkable.
I'll say the new edition delivers many of the same thrills and intelligent debate that made the original so exceptional.
We may still be waiting for the Sopranos of terrorism, a drama with fully imagined characters and emotional rather than technical realism. But as popcorn entertainment goes, Sleeper Cell is Smartfood, and a little dusting of cheese never hurt anyone.
Unfortunately, the second "season" isn't nearly as enthralling as its predecessor... In spite of these issues, Sleeper Cell is still definitely worth checking out
In the end American Terror won't be remembered as highly as season one, but that doesn't take away from how good the program was.
The quickened pulse is a plus: The violence registers as sharp, stinging slaps.
