Livewire

EPISODE:

TOMATOMETER

Critic Consensus: "Livewire" dials down the action to explore the human side of Supergirl and thankfully there's plenty of fun to be had in the dysfunctional family dynamics.

Episode Info

Kara's Thanksgiving may be ruined thanks to a tense visit from her foster mother, who seems to disapprove of her daughter's superhero role. There's also the matter of a volatile CatCo employee being transformed into the villainous Livewire to contend with over the holidays.

Critic Reviews for Livewire

Importantly, this episode also laid the foundation for Cat inevitably discovering Kara's true identity.

The Thanksgiving-set episode is obviously out of place, as the annual American holiday won't happen for nine days, but it did deliver one of the series' most enjoyable villains to date.

Not only did Monday's Thanksgiving episode deliver an energetic new villain to Supergirl's doorstep, but Kara spent the holiday mediating a fight between her sister and her foster mom.... [and] James was on a romantic Thanksgiving getaway with Lucy.

Four episodes in (though technically this was supposed to be the fifth), I am impressed by the way the writers have developed the characters and provided back story without sacrificing any action or humor.

Beyond pleasing fans with another Superman family cameo - Slater having played the heroine on film in Supergirl (1984) - the plotline arguably acted as the main thrust of the episode, at least beyond monster-of-the-week antics.

But I'm coming around to the idea that her naivety and childishness is her greatest asset, both for her character and for this over-arching story.

I'm thankful for the depiction of a truly dysfunctional family Thanksgiving.

Oh, and that final twist? It's a good one.

Everyone has their reasons for what they do, and the show wastes no time in its 43 minutes of airtime trying to justify the actions of its characters.

I already loved Livewire as a character, but Morgan actually managed to make one of the most over-the-top villains in DC completely human.
