At the helm of the USS Nathan James en route to the Arctic, Capt. Tom Chandler learns that the destroyer will be in the best possible place -- a circumstance his crew must utilize -- to save humanity from extinction. A virus has wiped out more than half the population since the ship embarked, and despite orders from the U.S. government to return, Chandler -- believing home is now a shadow of itself -- decides the safest place to develop a vaccine is at sea. That task falls mainly to virologist Dr. Rachel Scott, a civilian originally assigned to the Nathan James to study birds. "The Last Ship" is based on a novel by William Brinkley and is executive-produced by filmmaker Michael Bay ("Transformers").

Rob W Mar 19 After the weak plot of series 4 I was concerned Now we have nothing about viruses but instead rogue countries and invasions. It’s not about a last ship but now it’s back to military and it’s jam packed with action and thrills What a great way to end a well made additive tv show See more Raymond R @CainVirethorn 11/27/2024 This is an entertaining, though mostly unrealistic show plot wise. A lot of the plot has you scratching your head and saying "this would never happen." Season 5 especially had my annoyed and wanting to turn it off. Gonna be hones, this show should've stopped at 4 seasons, it would've ended on a good note. Instead, we have season 5, where, surprise surprise, something happens that makes the Nathan James the last ship. I hate it, I hate it and I hate it. They start to rebuild their fleet and get back on their feet, then the cliche "gotta stomp on them again." Season 5 was hands down the worst season and completely unnecessary. I could barely watch the first episode, let alone the entire season. The actors were all amazing, and I'll say the director knows how to choose sexy girls. Tex's daughter was hot, Kara was smoking hot, as was all of Chandler's love interests. This is a good show if you like pure action packed entertainment, but not at all worthwhile if you get annoyed by plots that make no sense and/or plots that get reused each season. See more Tarek A @tarekali 07/22/2023 The Last Ship is a gripping drama of high calibre. I have consumed many apocalyptic TV series, but this one stands apart with epic casting and production values. It is ironic we just got through a truly global pandemic, and this show spun up right before that. Eric Dane plays a brilliant captain, charged with guiding this last floating beacon of hope in a world awash with threats, domestic and foreign. Rhona Mitra plays the excellent counterpart, a scientist charged with developing the cures for a world plagued to the brink. Like every apocalyptic series, the end times bring out humanity's worst. We see this brazenly in both seasons 1 and 2 when the strongest who survive prey on the weakest through false narratives, whitewashing evil with pretentious virtue. It is precisely in such dark times that the weak rely on the strength, courage and morality of the crew of Nathan James, to defend the helpless. Season 2 brilliantly showcases how foreign and domestic enemies can undermine the noblest of efforts. I loved how season 3 expanded the chess board to the rest of the world. Old geopolitical games never get old, even in a newly decimated world. Certainly, old demons will take advantage of a global pandemic to advance genocidal ambitions in order to remake the world in their bloody image. None of the horrors of this season seem implausible. But it's always the domestic internal enemy that hollows out and eventually collapses an empire from within. The terrible scars of each personal loss are felt, overpowering in the end, as so many sacrifices are made. Season 4 took the show in a new twist, bringing new meaning to the word double whammy, and highlighting the sanity in the logic of an evil genius, once again hell-bent on dominating the world and being remembered for posterity. The crew continued to show unity and perseverance, with some interesting new members being added. The naval battles did not disappoint in the least, showing brains not brawn always wins the field. The final season opens on such a beautiful note, the calm before the final storm, the elder warrior musing about his remaining missions in life, what did it all mean? Could we have done better? It makes perfect sense that the final conflict will be far closer to home, with a demonstration of the vulnerability of digital platforms. I loved the return to old-school naval warfare and tactics, minus the benefit of electronics and software. It is poignant and touching to see the seasoned warriors remembering lost ones, and having a semblance of closure at the end of this last bloody chapter, as they seem to put down one last demon of the old world in the face of a new dawn. It's certainly sad and expected that our valiant crew pays a terrible price in life, limb and soul as they near the end of their 5 years of battle. The philosophical musings and parallels to ‘Moby Dick' and ‘Old Man and the Sea' are quite apt and a welcome change. The military operations of the last season were just spectacular. The last 15 mins of the series were a haunting stroll down memory lane, what a feast. One of the most enjoyable series. See more 02/18/2020 What a decline in quality, you really can tell nobody cared about season 5. The writers must be under the age of 10. See more 11/02/2019 The Nathan James embarks on one last mission in the fifth and final season of The Last Ship. When a Latin American dictator named Tavo launches a sneak attack on the United States' new naval fleet former admiral Mike Chandler comes out of retirement and takes the James to Central America to organize a resistance and prevent more counties from falling to Tavo's march across the Americas. It turns out that this being the shows last season is a good thing, as it really stretches for material and the plot seems contrived. Still, it attempts to honor the show's original premise by working in a computer virus as the catalyst for the sneak attack and the cast delivers some strong performances. Also, the writers take some daring risks, and do a good job at building dramatic tension and suspense. Season 5 of The Last Ship has its problems, but still delivers a thrilling adventure that closes out the series. See more 10/19/2019 full of action.. just amazing! See more Read all reviews
