"The Office" and "Extras" creator Ricky Gervais gets animated in this half-hour comedy series, which features the voices of Gervais, his longtime collaborator Stephen Merchant and their eccentric friend Karl Pilkington. The cartoon first appeared years ago as a radio show in London before it gained a massive audience when Gervais and Merchant turned it into a podcast, adding at that time Pilkington's offbeat contributions. Its HBO incarnation consists of the podcasts' audio coupled with the trio's animated likenesses, and story lines mainly revolve around the musings of Pilkington, whom Gervais affectionately terms "a bottomless well of stupidity."

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite being mercilessly mocked by Gervais and Merchant, the loveably pathetic Karl Pilkington remains the glue that holds The Ricky Gervais Show together.

Karl Pilkington is a hero to confused but outspoken amateur theorists -- and all dumb people, for that matter -- everywhere! Go to Full Review

The series...suffers from crude animation that only gets in the way of enjoying Pilkington's far-fetched thoughts and Gervais' bewildered reactions. In this case, it's better to be heard and not seen. Go to Full Review

The star is not the pompous Gervais or Merchant, who object and giggle throughout each segment, but the one member who never laughs or even smiles, yet entertains the heck out of us. Go to Full Review

For once, Gervais has proven not to be the towering comical genius he thinks he is. Go to Full Review
