Critic Reviews for The Strain Season 2
All Critics (22) | Top Critics (8) | Fresh (17) | Rotten (5)
The Strain is still camped out in the worst kind of uncanny valley, the one between the twin peaks of pulp and gore.
The Strain has slowly wormed its way into my affections, as surely as one of the show's vampire worms burrowing into a victim's eye.
You don't have to wait long for FX's vampire saga The Strain to deliver the creepy, cheeky shocks and gore that made the show a delightful summertime thriller last year.
The Strain has been an absolute mess this season, discrediting its own reality with its inconsistent logic... and refusing to explore its characters beyond the most superficial, plot-serving levels.
It was still much better than last season's flat climax.
Season 2 is a marked improvement over the first, but willfully stupid characters, circuitous storytelling, and convoluted world-building continue to keep the series from reaching its full potential.
The Strain works best when it knows exactly what it is: pulpy, goofy, comic book-like adventuring with a few creepy ideas peppered in to expand the lore.
Even for a series that knows how to get under one's skin, these babes of the dark are incredibly squirm-inducing.
With a talented group of actors and a B-movie like repertoire of dialogue and action set pieces, The Strain should be on the top of your must see list for the summer.
The great thing about the emergence of The Born and their masters, The Ancients, is that the show is shifting away from being just a story of humanity vs. vampires.
Sometimes we have to be incredibly bad before we can become somewhat good, and the good news was that The Strain came out swinging in the Season 2 premiere "BK, NY," hinting that a lot of the wrongs that made Season 1 such a chore have been righted.
The Strain continues to rely too much on action and not enough on compelling character development. The uneven results are entertaining but hardly infectious.
Audience Reviews for The Strain: Season 2

Jul 10, 2020The level is lower than the first season, but still have some good points and follow the rithmy.
-
Sep 13, 2018Scary and always look forward to next scary episode
-
Feb 14, 2018I struggled to get back into this show as the first 3-4 episodes are pretty inconsistent. The recasting of the son for a bad actor did not help and Corey Stoll is really annoying at times. The show does pick up in the 2nd half and by the end i was really entertained. overall another strong season but lacks Del Toro's assured hand this time.

Oct 20, 2017lost interest. watched 4 episodes (0.3 viewings)
-
Jul 25, 2017While character development is still uneven and some subplots are unimportant to the story. The characters are better rounded and more sympathetic. The action is still great and it remains scary.
-
Apr 22, 2017Another fantastic season.
-
Jan 28, 2017Season 2 of The Strain brings back all the elements that made the first so enjoyable, but still manages to keep the show feeling fresh and exciting. A little more horror, humor and gore also help to improve the show, while we dig deeper into the vampire mythos and the characters that make up this post apocalyptic vampire world.
-
Nov 02, 2016Not as good as the first season, especially I didn't like the mom element.
-
Oct 31, 2016<@ if (review) { @><@= review @><@ } @>Like this show. I would kill the boy zack. I am a little irritated that there always seems to be a pain in the butt character in every one of these stories that everyone lets live way too long. Just once, why can't the characters just kill "whiny buut-heads" just like "Bang" and then reference movies like this.
-
Sep 07, 2016Another great season! Keep bringin' it on!
