What to Know

Critics Consensus

Though it struggles to find its footing between thrilling caper and comedic drama, The Assassin is sustained by the full array of talent shared between Keely Hawes and Freddie Highmore to splendid effect.

A series with a first-rate cast that suffers a few too many self-inflicted wounds. Go to Full Review

Almost nothing anybody in The Assassin does makes sense for the person doing it. Nor does it not make sense. It’s just plot, expressed through pretty people. Go to Full Review

The set-up might be a little stilted, but by the second episode it settles into solidly entertaining potboiler territory. Go to Full Review

In just six episodes, the Williams brothers don't create anything particularly memorable, but they do get the best out of their two actors, and from a supporting cast that provides effective support...[Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

The Assassin offers a globe-trotting spy thriller story where its mother-son family bond is at the center. It doesn't stick the landing in every aspect, though I found myself endeared by its multifaceted story. Go to Full Review

It’s a big disappointment, then, that their latest six-part joint venture, the international comedy thriller The Assassin is something of a misfire. Go to Full Review

John E. @evanjohg123 Mar 24 Great acting and a fun plot. See more Fiona L @FionaNo1 Jan 16 Just awful. Badly written. Badly directed. Ridiculous plot. Abysmal. See more Joge T @dee83 Dec 30 ok ok, maybe Keely Hawes could never physically over power some of the men, she encountered, and yes its all about skilled choreography, but overlooking this....she is convincing and plays her part well. High marks for the screenwriting, the plot twists and turns and is not finally revealed until the final episode. It is certainly better crafted than some other espionage thriller series I have watched. The characters are well cast and are give credible performances. They are believable. See more Kristina S @K_Kanonkugle Dec 27 Very slow start, beautiful settings, awful lines and no expression on Edward’s face, he’s like a robot you expect to show his underlying metal made body in the last episode. Instead it gets worse, at the end he’s crying (where’s the onion?) Keely Hawes struggles not to giggle, her newfound relationship to beardy man is parked and then sail away on the beautiful sea - that boat was nice sailing all by it self! Watch only if you can’t see something else See more William N @William125 Dec 9 This was a bad watch, it's so ridiculous. It attempts to blend comedy and action and fails. So many of your typical tropes that are associated with assassin movies/series. The mother and son drama is insufferable. The action scenes are really bad. It was a challenge to get through the first episode. An absolute borefest. See more Bradford S @Radioheadpirate Dec 9 I’m not sure why there is so much hate in the reviews. I thoroughly enjoyed season one and felt the critics were spot on. The show is fun campy and doesn’t take itself too seriously. I was entertained and that’s all I look for in a show like this. The subject has been done a lot so I don’t expect the godfather. I just expect to be entertaining and for the sets locations and action to be solid. They were. It might start slowly for some but I enjoyed the ride. See more Read all reviews
