Pilots are hard to get right, particularly comedy pilots, so it's not surprising that "The Foretelling" is among the series' most uneven episodes. Go to Full Review

There is just something so amazingly awful, so delightfully despicable about the man that you can't help but hang on his every wicked wisecrack and/or deed. Go to Full Review
Christel Loar PopMatters 11/29/2018
Though the writing was strong and the verbal interplay was there, the first series made the mistake of abundance, with Edmund Blackadder too bumbling, the cast too abounding and the sets too sprawling. Go to Full Review
Adam Sloman Den of Geek 11/28/2018
Most of the jokes fall flat and there's no real wit of spark to the characters. Go to Full Review

It's definitely the writing and varying plateaus of verbal trickery used, even without the novel historical hook, that make Black Adder stand out. Go to Full Review

It's rare that a hist0ory-based comedy is genuinely funny, and in that sense Blackadder is a true diamond in the rough. Go to Full Review

Audience M @audiencem 01/02/2025 Season One is an intriguing but uneven start to a series that would later become a comedy classic. The premise is promising, and Rowan Atkinson’s portrayal of Prince Edmund ‘Blackadder’ is suitably ridiculous. See more Petros T @PetrosTserpelis 09/02/2021 The first entry in the Black Adder saga is very enjoyable but decidedly inferior to the sheer brilliance of the other three: this Black Adder is essentially a clueless, slimy moron, a differentiation that does make for several great moments but without matching the non-stop hilarity of his later incarnations. Still, the show boasts an excellent cast and hints more than once at the genius in the making: the characters gel more and more and the humour at times shows shades of vitriolic subversion. See more Dave S @RT88116482 07/12/2021 Really underated in some ways the best in the series . Great cast blessed great See more Read all reviews
