By toning down the superheroics early on in order to have a sufficient budget to pull off the Crisis. That makes for an episode more concerned with character development than flashy special effects, and for the most part it works pretty well.

Based on these first two episodes, Season 6 may well restore some of The Flash's missing shine. The series is definitely attempting to cover too much ground so early into the season, but at least it's able to build momentum along a number of fronts.
