The world is rich and mesmerizing, the characters are instantly compelling, and enough mystery is set up from the beginning that you'll want to stick around to see your questions answered.

The show is pretty good and despite the fact that it's intended audience is probably significantly younger than me... I enjoy the drama that unfolds in each episode.

The good outweighs the bad in a series that is still finding its feet. Here's hoping the second series is a less bumpy ride - and that Wil stops clumsily losing the Elfstones.

Judging by the ending and various cliffhangers that are posed, it seems that The Shannara Chronicles has studied the Game Of Thrones rulebook and drawn its own conclusions, but that's no bad thing.

As far as pilots go, this could have been a lot worse and I'm really excited to see where The Shannara Chronicles goes next.

Shannara is great fun, and good whole-family watching for teens with a fantasy bent.

Moving pictures require something different; messianic folderol is best served there with a little sex, and a little seltzer. That has been provided.

Terry Brooks' epic fantasy franchise has been MTV-ified with a tween-friendly cast, a Game of Thrones Jr. vibe, and a hero with boy band locks who resembles a pointy-eared Justin Bieber.

The Shannara Chronicles just emphasizes how much the former music video network can flex their collective muscles when called upon.

Leave it to MTV to take a relic of the 1980s and make it relevant again.

The show sputters along, never quite finding its footing between the stakes of a collapsing fantasy universe and a soapy teen drama.

Yes, it all feels relatively familiar and admittedly derivative in places, but its way better than one might expect from the network that typically traffics in the likes of Teen Mom and Ridiculousness.

The fact that the mostly inert The Shannara Chronicles is utterly familiar on both levels is a reminder that a truly vibrant fantasy story requires some sort of invention.

Here's the thing with teen-baiting sexiness though: it's an aesthetic that becomes grating when the story surrounding it is so serious, if only because teen-baiting sexiness is so serious in itself.

This show is best if not overthought; if you're going to make time for it, just enjoy the escapism.

It doesn't help that the characters seem to be allowed to switch from talking dour fantasy-novel heroes to bored millennials whenever the mood strikes them - perhaps something that might have to do with this being MTV.

It's not easy to make a show that appeals to fans and non-fans alike when you're talking about a world as fleshed out as Shannara -- but I think this show has it's heart in the right place.

When the characters stop talking and start acting, Shannara becomes a simple thrill. But it's a long and winding quest to get there.

Turns out to be just a lot of hokey bombast, wasted on a cast of callow babes in the exotic woods.

A would-be epic about elves, druids, and "rovers," with some magic "elf stones" and a grand quest thrown in there for good measure, The Shannara Chronicles is a lot of hooey with hotsy young actors.
