John C Nov 29 I have to start with the two actors who's performance most bothered me. If Polly Bergen was urged to play the role of Rhoda Henry as an annoying, selfish, vacuous, social climbing urchin, then she nailed it. To my mind she overplayed the part to the point that it took effort to watch the end of the series. As for Ali McGraw, I observed little nuance. While 14 years after "Love Story" she looked remarkably the same, the trouble is she ACTS nearly identically to her character as Jennifer Cavaleri! As the story unfolds it devolves into comedy. I almost wish she had uttered her telltale phrase "love means never having to say you're sorry." Another weakness, which likely is the book's author's fault, was putting Pug Henry in every crucial situation with every leading major player in the timeline. Simply unbelievable! And Robert Mitchum was two decades too old to play the part. This made his budding romance with the much younger, highly attractive British woman preposterous. The actor playing Hitler made him appear to be a foul puppet, frowning and spitting fire like an artificial sourpuss. No personage like that could have captivated Germany the way the real, much more complex Adolph did. What the series had going for it was a commitment to accurately chronicalling the events with an eye toward providing just enough context to put some story telling meat on the bones of a mere litany. See more Richard Feb 9 Wonderful book with a compelling story line, but watching Robert Mitchum at 65 playing a Navy Commander spoiled it for me. He was at least 20 years too old to play this part, and he looked it. Can't really understand this sort of casting mistake. It's probably not as gripping as the original "Shogun" mini-series (with Richard Chamberlain) - whose book I also read - but it's engaging enough. See more Dan S 10/07/2023 Before cable became popular!! ABC owned the rights and hardly showed it later. I loved this. Learned so much more about the time!! I still watch it sometimes. Love the locations!! Season 1 Aly Magraw was a little too old 42 year old playing a 29 year old. She was boisterous and War and Remberance I liked too so much. Depth and makes you research more. Love many of the characters even if they can be annoying at times. Jane Seymour I loved TV Mini Series Queen was in the 2nd season and she played subtle version Natalie. Love the locations. Big Big deal and the acting I think was authentic. Some people copy how people act. 80s to me much nicer and today nasty or rude some people because they copy what they see on tv!! Some kids today the way they talk to their parents and their parents let them do that too at that time in the 80s and before, parents would never let their kids talk like the way they do today in public or private in most walks of life. You know? I feel those times people had more respect especially for their family and the elderly! Plus I felt they were closer more!! Elderly got more respect, if they spoke up, most listened or let them speak especially younger people even if they did not agree but did not talk back. I saw the changes in the 90s and got worse in the 2000s and what you see today. See more Billy H 04/07/2023 Thought the series was pretty good. BUT they never got womens hair right for the period.
