What to Know

Critics Consensus

While Geralt of Rivia gets a new face, The Witcher overall is beginning to grow stale in a fourth season that dutifully sets up the series' endgame without having enough fun along the way.

[Chris Hemsworth's] quietly ridiculous turn is nonetheless perfectly attuned to a show that harks back to the days before fantasy was cool and gets by (just about) on sheer silliness. Go to Full Review

Perhaps it’s fitting that we only have to toss a coin to our witcher once more after this. Go to Full Review

No amount of imaginative swordplay or inventive creature design can prevent the sense that The Witcher is now what all sword and sorcery epics fear becoming: pure bilge. Go to Full Review

There is action, sex, violence, bloodshed, twists, turns, and lots of monsters, but none of it feels repetitive or rote. The Witcher continues to live up to expectations and, for the first time, has exceeded mine. Go to Full Review

It took me a while to remember where all the characters were in the story, and in fact who a lot of them were. … The unfortunate thing is that [Hemsworth] is just not as monumental as Cavill. It’s a slightly gentler version than the mean, hulking Cavill. Go to Full Review

Harry L @RT97322660 22h The writers and producers clearly hated that the main character was male. If the Witcher really had been a character focused deep level story following Geralt (perfectly acted by Cavill) with his travelling companion Dandelion we could have had a gritty, funny, exciting and meaningful show. Instead we got this. The irony is that the most important People in Geralt's life are with the exception of dandelion BOTH excellent female characters. See more Вячеслав М @RT43457369 5d a weak script, overloaded dialogues, a sprawling plot and a feeling of "nothing is happening." When the characters started telling their stories through "blah blah" it was a complete face palm! Hey, screenwriters, did they teach you in school that a character is revealed through action? See more Ian T @RT65798614 Mar 22 Showrunners doubled down on their mistakes, which tells you how little they know about writing. Staying loyal to source material is a must not to please the fans, but because every scene in a book is a mechanical device with a clear purpose, like pieces of an engine. Before you start tearing apart a V10 Twin Turbo engine, you better know what each piece does and why it is there, and if you are going to replace them with your own homemade bricolage, you better know an awful lot about engineering. Otherwise, the whole thing is going to blow up on your face, which is what happened when the the writers tried to jam their own amateur cliché stories and unintelligent characters inside the powerful and well oiled machine that was the original plot. See more David M @RT27667322 Mar 16 I never read the books, so I get why longtime fans might be frustrated. But as someone just watching the show, I thought the fourth season was good. It was entertaining and did what it needed to do as a fantasy series. Out of curiosity, I ended up watching a YouTube video about the backlash and the differences from the books, and I can see why fans feel strongly. When you love the source material, changes can be tough. That said, judging the show on its own, I really enjoyed the season. It felt like a solid continuation of the earlier ones, and I ended up binge-watching the whole thing. Liam isn’t Henry, but the supporting cast really helped carry the season. Liam did a solid job, though he didn’t quite feel like the central character this time around. There were a lot of parallel storylines, and the showrunners did a great job diving into the backstories of the main characters, which I actually really enjoyed. See more Raj A @Supplex Mar 7 After the change of the cast, I didn't have the same feeling as before See more Joe T @Hdbsvag Mar 2 The cast change was horrendous. I was deeply invested in the Withcher story line for the first three seasons until the 4th one became utterly horrid compared to its previous seasons. Then the storyline and vibe was drastically changed. It felt dead compared to the first three seasons. See more Read all reviews
