A six-hour series details events during three decades in which two world wars caused terrible death and devastation. It depicts the battles through the eyes of powerful men like Roosevelt, Hitler and Mussolini. The documentary shows the conflicts in a continuous timeline from 1914 to 1945, with the leaders coming of age during World War I, before making world-changing decisions in World War II. It features commentary by Sen. John McCain, Prime Minister John Major and others. Actor Jeremy Renner, a two-time Oscar nominee, narrates.

RB G @RT22453000 03/27/2025 Despite informative interviews by prominent military and political figures, the series if rife with sloppy and lazy editing. For example in episode three, the bow of a contemporary aircraft carrier is shown (twice) plowing through the water while the narrator talks about Rosevelt’s decision to deploy carriers to Midway. A minute or two later while describing the four Japanese aircraft carriers sunk at Midway, the images flashing on screen appeared to be damaged American aircraft carriers (except for one). These are just two of many examples where the director insults his audience, by probably thinking they’re too stupid to notice. Other examples. - An extra who is supposed to be dead moves his head in an action shot. The sequence was used anyway. - In a dramatization, Patton introduces himself as a captain, but he has second lieutenant bars on his uniform. Later the series credits Patton for defeating Italy in six weeks. While Patton played the predominant role in taking the island of Sicily, he was not the commander of the mainland forces in Italy, a huge error. - McArthur is shown as a five-star general prior to the outbreak of World War II. - Contemporary US war ships are repeatedly used in shots describing a 1940s era naval fleet. The recreations are so bad that at one point a truck drives through a scene with the museum placard identifying it as a 1944 Dodge still attached to the side. Just plain sloppy. To their credit, the series recognizes that the communist-leader Stalin had more in common with Hitler than with Rosevelt and Churchill. So there’s at least that. With a myriad of channels to watch, why not take an extra few hours to vet the footage rather than presenting an amateurish production that diminishes the high-powered interviews and insults the audience? See more dlma1 @dlma1 02/13/2023 This was horrible. I was so disappointed that the History Channel would show this crap. It is full of inaccurate information: for example, they had Patton leading the Italian Campaign, when he left after he slapped those soldiers in Sicily. Other examples include showing B-17s bombing London and modern ships attacking Japan! In fact, when IMDB still had message boards, my sarcastic post on "things I learned from 'The World Wars'" had about 100 replies and trended high for a while. Direction and acting were sub-par. The sets were cheaply done - apparently, Stalin, Hitler, Churchill, and Roosevelt all made decisions on the same porch while sipping wine. Finally, the casting was suspect, they used a 6-foot actor to portray Stalin! I can't believe this junk was nominated for an Emmy. See more Read all reviews
