Critic Reviews for True Detective Season 3

All Critics (81) | Top Critics (28)

Season Three of True Detective doesn't have quite the pulling power of the first go-around, in which McConaughey's revelatory performance immediately jumped off the screen.

It is neither as raw and gripping as the series' rookie season nor as structurally unsound as its second. It is good, not great.

Given the cryptic and slow burning nature of the show - creator Nic Pizzolatto and co. are big on holding back key details until the right moment.

True Detective Season 3 is a little more workmanlike and less baroque, perhaps too eager to prove that it can tell a legible story again.

Despite the shadowy distractions, "True Detective" is a solid procedural led by a faceted leading performance.

Ali's character, Detective Wayne Hays, a Vietnam vet, a loner with a suspicious nature, is another of Ali's indelible characterizations, an absolute must-see.

"Time is a flat circle" be damned - with Pizzolatto showing a bit more restraint, audiences get something straightforward, but filled with enough twists and turns to keep us on the edge of our seats.

Ali isn't in every scene in True Detective; it just seems like it. The show is Ali's masterpiece, and the third season is the best installment since it premiered five years ago to excessive praise.

Audience Reviews for True Detective : Season 3

Just awful. Season 1 was perhaps the greatest series of all time. Season 2 was messy. But this had promise. My high hopes were dashed by the second episode where what seemed like a good, spooky plot turned into a ham fisted narrative on race relations and anti-white social justice posturing. That's not entertaining, HBO. It's a virtue sermon and that's not what we tune in for. Ali is a good actor and deserved a better story. In fact the story is barely relevant in True Detective Season 3, which seems an after thought to the more mundane and preachy subplot about race. Snooze.

solid tv crime. the characters are better than the story

Loved seasons 1 and 3. Really good acting from both guys, and the job makeup did aging them was great. Season 3 didn't have the ending I wanted, but nonetheless it was well thought out and unexpected. Enjoyed it.

Impossible to focus on crime or care about solving it with constant distraction from time shifts. What worked so well in Season 1 became an unnecessary gimmick in Season 3. In the end the character development was uninteresting and unconvincing.

Mahershala Ali's performance gives an astonishing performance has you feel the weight of show all from him. He carries the show, he does an amazing job embodying the aura of the moments they are in. Each scene he is in it, it reflects strongly what is going on in the show. When he is worried or scared or confused, you are too. Its fantastic because you are so involved with the main character. The supporting cast does really great too, the acting and performances were solid. The show takes a lot of twists and turns and is not predictable which is great! Its nothing like other shows so if youre looking for something new and not a rehashed story told over and over again, you should definitely gives this a watch.

The final hour of the season was trash. The rest was brilliant. Worst ending ever. Trite, contrived and pointless.
  • Sep 08, 2019
😅Not as bad as Season 2👍
  • Sep 06, 2019
The acting is unbelievable, the story is captivating, and it's freaking true detective.
  • Sep 05, 2019
The Acting here was phenomenal much like the other two seasons. In Season 3 we once again return to two detectives working on a case that becomes more complicated as it goes on, but the story becomes more about our detectives than the case itself. The difference here is that the focus becomes centered around one detectives personal problems with his mental health, and the case almost becomes irrelevant in the show. We don't get big insight or clues found through taking great risks, instead they just happen to be found or recognized. It's certainly a choice to make the story like this, but it just isn't as great or brilliant as Season 1 was.
