Modern-day families, couples and individuals re-create life in London's East End from 1860 to 1900, confronting the tough living and working conditions of the urban poor during the Victorian era. Beginning with the 1860s, each episode focuses on a specific decade. Throughout the series, participants deal with living in sparse quarters, an economic depression heightened by the arrival of Irish immigrants looking for work, a water shortage, and the social reforms that are brought about by London's economic recovery.
