Vikings: Season 1 Reviews

It deals mostly with one family, rather than the dozens that populate the world of GoT - the show is as good, if not better, at a lot of elements familiar to fans of George RR Martin's epic.

The plotting and characterisation are simple going on simplistic, but business picks up as Ragnar takes the boys off to northeast England in episode two, and the whole thing has a drive and seriousness of purpose

In a way, it's all just another iteration of Tony Soprano, as Vikings emphasizes a core pride and nobility in this tribe of thugs and galoots.

Such is the power of Vikings that we come to know and even root for them, so enthralling are they and almost everything else here.

Vikings have always lent themselves to a certain kind of "B" entertainment and this latest iteration proves no exception.

If you're not too picky about historical accuracy, and not too put off by cheap-looking computer effects, you'll find much to enjoy in this entertaining adventure, bolstered by a terrifically engaging performance from Travis Fimmel.

Vikings is yet another epic example of what the shrinking Big Four broadcast networks just aren't doing anymore. It's now left to others to mount captivating, money-on-the-screen trips to other times and places.

Vikings is great to look at, shot gorgeously in Ireland with a reported $40 million budget and a cast with many familiar faces.

Mostly, Vikings is disappointing because so much of the component parts are good but are ill served by flabby direction and a gassy script.

The role of high technology is a particularly germane facet of Vikings, lending the series an unexpected resonance in today's society grappling with the cyberfrontier.

Despite such occasional awkwardness, Vikings is an entertaining educated guess about what went on during an intriguing but underexplored moment in history.

The series has a huge amount of sword-fighting, plundering, non-graphic sex (no nudity) and bloodshed, which will appeal to fans of the genre.

It's rare that a work of fiction has us hoping that barbarians will resume robbing and killing innocent people, but our motivation isn't sympathy with the series' heroes. It's boredom.

A winning combination of action and historical drama that should attract a robust audience.

Fimmel makes a nicely kinetic lead, and Byrne could entertain by reading the phone book - or merely casting his lizard-eyed stare upon it.

The series is nonetheless transporting in its way, largely because it doesn't try too hard to soften or civilize the characters.

If Vikings is not particularly deep, it's at least endlessly entertaining, and the world it evokes ends up being one of the most instantly compelling on television.
