I’m seduced by the softness and warmth of the production. I enjoy the way I’m asked not just to listen or judge, but to observe. And I revel in deep ambiguity. So I guess it’s fine it doesn’t make a lot of sense, it’s 2020, I’ll take it. Go to Full Review

It definitely requires patience and may not be for those who are in constant need of action and drama, but those who have enjoyed Guadagnino’s filmography will revel in the presence of his poetic style. Go to Full Review

...clarity is not what Guadagnino is even striving for, and that would be fine if the characters (away from the central pairing) were not so under-written. It’s hard to have empathy for any of them, and that makes We Are Who We Are frustrating... Go to Full Review

Ultimately, it is this realism and acceptance of complexity that elevates We Are Who We Are to the level that it stands. Go to Full Review

M 01/10/2025 This show is BUNS. The characters are basically all in one massive polyamorous relationship and commit heinous acts, making NONE of them likable. The pacing is horrible and the characters are shallow; there is no clarity regarding their motives or development. They are also disloyal and hard to look at, let alone watch for 8 hours straight....sometimes they speak in riddles? At least the location is pretty (and they still complain about living in a seaside town in Italy). The mom and main son have some Freudian issues and abuse each other, and there are several underage relationships and pedophilic undertones??? See more 01/20/2021 Another amazing HBO production. See more 01/17/2021 "I hope the audiences feel love, I hope they feel confusion, I hope they feel restlessness." Luca Guadagnino doesn't need to hope when he is producing art that creates such equally strong visceral and intellectual reactions. See more 12/03/2020 As a teen myself I found this show very relatable, in my life I've felt most of the things that the characters feel at one point or another and I've grown to love and understand all of the teens. It's such an intimate and accurate portrayal of what it feels like to discover who you are and where you fit in, the first love, friend-group drama, questioning your sexuality and testing your limits. And I especially love the message, you don't need to label it, you simply are who you are and it's ok to be confused or change your mind. I see this show as a perfect mix of Euphoria and Call me by your name and I really appreciate its slow pace; it makes it feel even more authentic. See more 11/28/2020 Plaintive. Nostalgic. Mundane. Beautiful. One of the finest pieces of television perhaps ever made. The empathy it builds for every character is masterful, yet there are no villains. It is profoundly realistic yet achingly wistful. I can't praise this series highly enough. I accept that maybe I'm the target demographic, and some of the themes speak to me through personal experience, but I imagine this is what everyone who watches it, regardless of background, feels. It is hard to see how anyone wouldn't be drawn to intense introspection, and longing for the past, when watching this show. It manages, through a cracking sound track and "arty" but assured direction (there is some amazing imagery, for example how the Italian boy Fraser meets in bologna simply vanishes when Fraser turns his back to remember Cate). The acting is generally spot on, with perhaps a slightly wooden performance by Kid Kudi. There are some nudity, and abuse scenes, but even these seem so realistic, understated, that they take on a sense of innocence. A must see! See more 11/28/2020 I've never seen a show grasp the feeling of teenage uncomfortableness like We Are Who We Are. Unlike other series with a young adult/teen focus, there's nothing flashy or truly shocking, only strange intimacies between people trying figure out who they are, and those old enough to know better. Though at times the story seems motionless and the frame empty, this series allows what is shown and heard space to speak for itself. See more Read all reviews
