What to Know

Critics Consensus

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is Wonder Man, turning in a sly performance alongside an equally wonderful Ben Kingsley in this low-stakes superhero fare that boasts high-hearted personal drama as its winning factor.

Audience Says

Wonder Man finds alchemy in its leading men, who deliver a refreshingly human story with greater emotional power than straight up kicks -- and it’s all the stronger for it.

A satire about struggling actors and the ludicrous Hollywood inequality they’re trying to get around doesn’t sound like a particularly original idea, but when you plug it into the dour world of Marvel superheroes it’s actually a welcome change of pace. Go to Full Review

The actors’ chemistry and undeniable bromance is a great reason to watch, but this is also an entertaining and low-stakes story that doesn’t require mass MCU viewing or knowledge to fully enjoy. Go to Full Review

It’s a different kind of Marvel epic. Special effects take a backseat to laughs as Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Sir Ben Kingsley spoof egomaniac actors who learn it’s better to stop chasing fame and be in it for the love of the game. Go to Full Review

One of the best first seasons of any show ever, and the chemistry between Yahya and Sir Ben are off the mothereffing charts. I would watch these two read from a phone book. Go to Full Review

Is there a larger implication here that Disney might benefit from making smaller, more personal stories instead of louder, emptier spectacles? Maybe. Is Wonder Man wonderful anyway? Absolutely. Go to Full Review

This is more about an insecure loner with a chip on his shoulder discovering the benefits of opening up and being vulnerable. It’s about finding a friend and remembering what it means to trust someone implicitly no matter the consequences. Go to Full Review

Max W @MaxthorWoo Jun 21 While it may not match the caliber of some established limited series, Wonder Man truly brings a breath of fresh air to the current MCU landscape and expands new possibilities for series creation. Ben Kingsley’s performance, in particular, showcases exceptionally mature acting. See more Charity C. @ChaChaHollaa111 Jun 18 I was not expecting to like it, but I genuinely enjoyed it. Might rewatch soon See more karen H @RT21183679 Jun 10 I'm sorry, but I was seriously disappointed in Wonderman. I found it slow and boring, and even though the character building and back story grew, the plodding of it never gave it legs or enough room to grow. Most of the time I was wondering if it was ever going to go anywhere. Wonderman actually doesn't do anything wonderful, and the characters were never given any room to grow. Ben Kingsley really stole the show for me. Generally, it wasn't to my taste, and I'm a mega MCU fan. It's not the first time I've been disappointed by MCU - She Hulk was terrible. I'm keeping my fingers crossed this isn't the shape of things to come for the MCU Universe! See more Brendan T. @JackTheSipper712 Jun 10 Kind of a slow burn but a fun show with great acting See more Vixo S @vixo_six Jun 9 Wonder Man works because it does not try to feel like another oversized Marvel entry. Its first season finds strength in distance, focusing less on spectacle and more on identity, performance and the question of what makes someone real beyond the role others assign to them. Yahya Abdul Mateen II gives the series a solid emotional center, but Ben Kingsley is the clear standout. His performance is charismatic, layered and surprisingly moving, turning what could have been a secondary presence into one of the season's strongest elements. The series benefits from feeling smaller and more intentional than many recent superhero projects. It is not perfect, and part of its impact may come from low expectations, but its sincerity makes it feel refreshing. By not trying to prove its importance, Wonder Man becomes one of the more engaging Marvel stories in recent years. See more Tom F @RT55173143 Jun 8 This sort of thing is how the MCU justifies itself.
