"Working the Engels" is all about family and working together, literally. After the death of the father, the Engel family must come together and deal with his massive amount of debt by running his storefront law firm. All family members become co-workers with one minor difference: Daughter Jenna is the only one qualified to practice law. Joining Jenna at the law firm is her mother, widow Ceil, pill-popping sister, Sandy, and bad-boy brother, Jimmy. Forced into the position of business matriarch, Jenna tries to keep her whole, crazy family together.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Though watching Andrea Martin is enjoyable, Working the Engels wastes her talent with groan-worthy gags and lackadaisical writing.

Though the series may have some passing connection to Arrested Development in terms of setup, it isn't able to capture the depth or tone or charm that elevates a comedy out of just being mediocre to being something really great. Go to Full Review

Watching Levy and Martin rekindle the spark of their SCTV days is especially a treat, a feisty back-and-forth that harkens back to a time when viewers had to wait until after the 10 o'clock news news to find out if Canadians could be funny. Go to Full Review

It's a real pleasure to see [Andrea Martin] back on the small screen in Working the Engels, a less-than-ambitious sitcom that shines every time she makes an appearance. Go to Full Review
Jessica Johnson Time Out Chicago 07/02/2018
After Arrested Development, the wild and crazy antics of the rest of the Engel family are incredibly uninspired and unfunny. Go to Full Review

All the actors on the show are appealing and have good comic timing; the problem is, they're called upon to act like frantic sitcom characters, spitting out weak jokes at a machine-gun pace, rather than real people. What a pity. Go to Full Review
