Silly 90s action flick. It's surprisingly low-key for a movie of this nature. I mean, seriously, it's basically just Tom Berenger and Billy Zane wandering around the jungle for an hour and a half, bickering. While that can sound like fun in itself, it doesn't make for the most thrilling action movie...

Tom Berenger's very strong screen presence, together with some compelling visuals, should have made this jungle adventure a classic. However, it suffers from some irritating dialogue and poor character development.

Two guys traipsing through the jungle talking about life and killing people for half of the movie makes for a dull movie. More time is spent in normal gunfights and capture and evasion then on sniper tactic and shots. The movie does a poor job of establishing the relationship between the two snipers, so that it's later breakdown and resurrection does not seem realistic. It is schizophrenic between being a sniper movie and a Rambo movie, and it fails at being either.

I love it. All the sniper movies. I sometimes do a sniper marathon and watch them all.

Generic story, but the ending of the film is quite good. The Billy Zane's character is ridiculous and being a trained sniper who struggles to pull the trigger is a bizarre characteristic to give him. The film is very typical of the era and that's essentially why it has been all but forgotten. It is riddled with conventional storytelling and cliché character arcs. I watched this a lot growing up and sadly this now fails to meet those easily pleased expectations of the past. The strong finale saves this film from being an utter bore and makes you wonder if they had a stronger first and second half, would it be a better film? 07/10/2019

I remember being mildly entertained by this slow moving action film back in the day and re-watching it now, I was again mildly entertained. Tom Berenger plays an army sniper who is saddled with a new young know-it-all partner, Billy Zane, and the two must work together on a dangerous mission in South America. The one part of the film that was burned into my memory is a key sequence where the two are outside a military compound trying to move into position for a shot on their target. The best moment of that sequence is Zane looking through a scope across the field only to see a clump of grass unexpectedly slide across the field, which is Berenger stealthily getting into position. The build-up to this sequence of Berenger and Zane trekking through the jungle is not especially well written, but the two actors make the most of it and do manage to make it watchable. The events of the film occurring afterwards aren't all that interesting either. The filmmakers clearly wanted to make this a taught psychological thriller of dueling snipers and diverging world views, but the script is nowhere smart enough for that. I did see that Walon Green ("The Wild Bunch" "Hill Street Blues") was one of the executive producers and Barry Levinson ("The Wire" "Bugsy") was attached to direct at one point, so very likely this was going to be a much smarter film somewhere along the line. Still, that one set piece in the middle of the film and strong performances by Berenger and Zane make "Sniper" worth checking out. The great J.T. Walsh also appears in the film, but if you want a great sniper duel film, watch "Enemy at the Gates" instead.

Berenger does a decent job, good sniper action scenes. Billy Zane is a bit much to take as the novice shooter in charge but overall a pretty good action movie from a few decades back.

Ok movie. There's not much in the way of plot, and character development is practically non-existent, but the action is well-executed, the concept of getting inside a sniper's mindset and planning fairly unique and Berenger's lead performance is compelling enough to make this a watchable genre pic.
