A brawny, entertaining spectacle, but lacking emotional resonance.

Troy puts immense care into every single beat of its action, and as a result these sequences drive its emotions in a way the script often fails to achieve Go to Full Review

In terms of historical accuracy, Troy is probably on par with Van Helsing. But for balancing intimate stories with spectacular battles in an old-school-sized epic, it's closer to Gladiator. Go to Full Review

... it’s hard to take the cataclysmic events of this ancient war seriously, as it is entirely predicated on an unconvincing romantic gesture of a prince with the impulse control of a spoiled brat and the political consideration of a cat in heat. Go to Full Review

bent S @RT18158288 2d Pretty good movie I think Brad Pitt played great in this move See more Red in D @redindenver 2d I was never a big Brad Pitt fan. But then I hadn't watched many of his movies. I watched this movie free on a streaming service several months ago. I'm SO glad I did. I loved the movie, loved Brad Pitt and Eric Bana. But ALL of the main character actors did a great job. I cared about most, if not all, of the main characters; and loved hating the villains. I ended up hating Paris the most due to the naivety, immaturity and carelessness of his character (in this movie, at least). This movie had some of the best dialog/scenes I've ever seen in a movie. Since watching it several months ago, I've watched it several more times. That is something I do only rarely. It intrigued me enough that I did some research on the historical event/story after seeing it for the first time. This movie made me a Brad Pitt fan. I've now watched several of his more notable films (most very old now). Surprisingly, I found him to be much more than just another pretty face. See more Alex B @AlexBioni 3d The face that launched a thousand ships. Troy has its flaws, but I still had a good time. The production design and costumes are excellent, and the battles deliver the scale you want from an epic. However, for an R-rated film, it could have used more gore, and some fighting felt choreographed in spots. The opening feels overwhelming due to the number of characters, though the story is easy to follow. Some dialogue is rough, especially the early scene where Achilles trains Patroclus. The score is mostly forgettable, but the Trojan Horse sequence has great music. The action is entertaining and finds its stride after the Paris vs. Menelaus duel. Brad Pitt is a great Achilles, even if he scowls more than he speaks. I liked it enough to revisit, and with Nolan’s The Odyssey on the horizon, it’s a decent primer, but the movie is honestly kind of forgettable. There are definitely better historical epics I would watch over this one. See more Vixo S @vixo_six Jul 6 Troy is a film I liked, but it did not leave a deep mark on me. It is an entertaining epic, visually solid and with worthwhile moments, although its greatest strength comes more from Homer’s myth than from the film itself. The most interesting part is its psychological side: Achilles as a man obsessed with glory because he fears being forgotten, and Hector as his moral contrast, guided by duty, family and responsibility. The film works better when it explores the tension between honor, pride, desire and mortality than when it tries to impress only through scale. It has powerful scenes and appealing characters, but it does not always turn that grandeur into something truly memorable. I enjoyed it, although I remain more fascinated by the original story than by the adaptation. The story does just enough to carry it through. A battle worth staying for. See more Sadie S. @Happyperson.9875 Jun 28 Loved this action movie. Casting was excellent and the sets seem to be very accurate of the time. I was never bored watching this movie and appreciated the attention to detail. See more Read all reviews
