Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) is the only survivor when she crash lands on Fiorina 161, a bleak wasteland inhabited by former inmates of the planet's maximum security prison. One assumes that Weaver received enough combat pay to compensate for playing the now understandably cynical Ripley in this bleak and pointlessly grueling movie.

It does succeed in rounding the three movies off, not smashingly but interestingly. It drives us into the wall, throws Ripley into a blind alley from which, at last, there is no escape hatch.

The movie folds back upon its previous incarnations again and again, never attempting to advance its twice-told tale, content merely to retell once more. What's on screen seems aimed more at making money than making myth.

It was nice to have a continuation in the story but sadly this movie was nowhere near as good as the first two. Still entertaining, just not amazing. EDIT: just realised this movie was not directed by James Cameron. This explains everything.

A hot mess. I’m unclear what was going on except alien eating people. Lots of characters who looked and talked the same but unclear what any of their roles were. Not really any idea what I watching except for alien thing. Not one I can recommend. Watched on DVD.

Story: 8/10 – Darker and more introspective than its predecessors. The story focuses on isolation, sacrifice, and mortality. Some pacing and plot choices are divisive, but it adds a unique, bleak layer to the franchise. Visuals / Atmosphere: 9/10 – The prison planet setting is grim and oppressive. Ridley Scott (and David Fincher, uncredited) deliver an industrial, foreboding world that heightens tension. Action / Suspense: 8.5/10 – The action is more contained than Aliens, but the suspense is strong. The alien encounters feel dangerous and personal. Soundtrack / Sound Design: 8.5/10 – Elliot Goldenthal’s score supports the dark tone, and the sound design makes the alien truly menacing. Performances: 8.5/10 – Sigourney Weaver continues to carry the franchise with Ripley’s emotional depth. The supporting cast fits the grim tone of the story. Overall: 8.5/10
