Neil C @RDUNeil May 3 A generic high school comedy that somehow rises above its cliches and bad taste to be really, really funny. I'll admit to a bias in favor of this film because it was one of the first movies my girlfriend now-wife saw together and loved it. "Fine! You're both Kiss dolls!" is still something we yell when we start to get frustrated at something. Rewatching it now, the interesting this is that the cringe moment doesn't come from some raunchy joke, but in the stalker nature of the Embry/Hewitt "relationship" at the end. There was a chance for some real pathos between the two that could have been hilarious. Instead we got some unnatural kiss and utter lack of chemistry. The rest of the movie was really smart... but they drop the ball at the end. Still hilarious. The movie follows a large group of characters over the course of one chaotic night, and while the ensemble approach gives it energy, it also means some storylines feel more interesting than others. There are a few funny moments and relatable teen situations scattered throughout, and the film has a certain late-90s charm that helps it stay watchable. However, most of the humor and drama is fairly predictable, and the character arcs don’t always land with much depth or payoff. It’s enjoyable in a light, background-watch kind of way, but not something that sticks with you for long after it ends. Overall, it’s a solid but average teen comedy that earns a 6/10.
