I'm a huge William Powell and Hedy Lamarr fan and they both are quite good in this corny, but still intriguing story about a diplomat who at one point in his past lost his memory and is then later blackmailed by Basil Rathbone who claims that Powell murdered a man during the period of time he can't remember. Powell then has to figure to how to protect his now successful life with beautiful wife Lamarr and decide whether he really did kill a man at one point or not. I've recently become obsessed with Hedy Lamar, who was considered one of the most popular and beautiful actresses of her time, but who now is pretty much forgotten. My theory on her is that she never appeared in a single film that is considered a classic. Most all of her films range from entertaining if not especially memorable (like this film) to truly bad films (like "The Story of Mankind"). I predict that in 60 years Jennifer Aniston will be in this same boat, with maybe only "Office Space" allowing her to be remembered. But back to this film, Powell is great as always and Lamar is good as well, who help elevate what is essentially a kind of silly potboiler type of story.

Slickly done MGM programmer. It may not be a top-of-the-line production, but it still has the studio's signature polish and glamor... A mystery wrapped in an enigma--Enjoyable did-he-didn't-he mystery... Atmospheric and harrowing amnesia drama!!

Glossy MGM drama from its glory days with a fantastic cast of expert actors. Bill Powell is urbane, Hedy ravishing, Claire ultra glamourous and Basil a suave villian. All acquit themselves well and are well served by a clever script.

This movie had an interesting story, but the plot was a little plodding to make it really shine, even though it featured three excellent actors; namely, William Powell, Hedy Lamarr, and Basil Rathbone.

Good mystery, nothing new or different but it's quite well done and with William Powell and Hedy Lamarr as the leads you can't go too wrong! Good screenplay, always interesting.
