Deathtrap, like many intricate stage thrillers, reveals its artifice on the screen but remains crackling good fun. Go to Full Review
Gary Arnold Washington Post 04/28/2018
Deathtrap seems an unusually skillful and satisfying example of devious entertainment. It offers as much double-crossing amusement as one can reasonably expect from a theatrical murder mystery. Go to Full Review
Bruce McCabe Boston Globe 04/28/2018
The film is marvelous claptrap, a skillfully wrought -- indeed, over-wrought -- piece of preposterous escapist entertainment. Go to Full Review

An entertaining, sharply directed, and vibrantly acted stage-to-screen adaptation, which both embraces the play’s origins yet also feels cinematic. Go to Full Review

Lauren S @MONKS85 4d The rustic set design and fun plot twists keep this stage play to screen adaptation afloat. It's not as intense, or creepy as say, Rope or Wait Until Dark and the dialogue was a bit over the top but Christopher Reeve's performance is worth it. He was so talented. Caine's yelling fits and Cannon's anxious delivery were a little much but I suppose that's how the characters were written and directed. I didn't get a lot of dark comedy, tho it was present. The music was on point. I'll probably watch it again for Reeve alone and since I got the blu-ray brand new for $3, it will stay in my collection. See more Dallas H @FozzieMcFly Jan 5 For some reason, I always find stage adaptations of stage plays intriguing to watch. Second of all, it piques my interest when the play is written by Ira Levin, who is credited with writing the novels Rosemary's Baby, The Stepford Wives, and The Boys from Brazil; all of which were also adapted into movies. I enjoyed watching this movie! It's great to watch Christopher Reeve and Michael Caine act together in a Sidney Lumet film. See more Olivia J Oct 15 It wants to mislead us at every turn, confound all our expectations, and provide at least one moment when we levitate from our seats and come down screaming. It succeeds, more or less. See more iDream Mar 4 Dyan Canon is always as funny as she is beautiful. Michael Caine also delivers his role with such subtle ease. But it was especially entertaining to watch Christopher Reeves play a psychopath so well. He was truly a gifted actor. The plotline offers a lot of well timed and engaging twists and turns, except for the very end. It almost feels like they had so much fun making the movie that they forgot about the time and suddenly realized they had to wrap it up quickly and ended up with a whimper. Still, as a whole, it's worth watching. See more CodyZamboni Z @CodyZamboni 02/13/2025 Movie is very clever, Very amusing. Very twisty, And very meta, Well acted, Only demerits are the stagy setting, and the annoying neighbor with ESP. See more Landon J @Minxsykitty 02/07/2025 I unfortunately had the twist spoiled for me before watching. Despite that I still enjoyed it. I think the ending though was a little fumbled. Ending particularly demonstrates the negative aspects of adaptations of this nature. Overall excels in creating tension, great subtleties in acting, and narrative subversion.
