Movie Info

For thousands of years, humans have believed that there were once flying monsters. They became mythologized, with stories about them shared around the world. But could they have really existed? 220 million years ago dinosaurs were on their rise to dominating Earth. But another group of reptiles was set to make an extraordinary leap: pterosaurs were about to take control of the skies. These creatures were the first flying vertebrates, which grew to have a 40ft wingspan, the size of a jet. The story of how and why these mysterious creatures took to the air is more fantastic that any fiction.

"Monsters" is informative, cogent and a word one wouldn't usually associate with 80-foot-tall films about dinosaurs: charming.

Behind the hard-sell title and trailers lies an informative, child-friendly documentary about the evolutionary development and legacy of pterodactyls and other winged reptiles that should enjoy a long run at museums and science centers.

It's one thing watching a science fiction movie with its clutch of exotic creatures, but it's quite another watching a documentary in IMAX 3D that puts us within touching distance of a flying pterosaur the size of a giraffe 220 million yeas ago

The great thing about this veteran national treasure is that he can make almost anything interesting - and he doesn't have to try very hard here.

It wasn't all that long ago that this sort of short, lightly scientific, flashy documentary was pretty much all you could see at Imax cinemas. Now they are used fill up the gaps between the likes of Sucker Punch and Avatar.

Audience Reviews for Flying Monsters 3D with David Attenborough

Be sure to import the 70 minute British extended cut rather than the needless cut down American version. But for the original cut this is a fantastic look at the science behind this unique group of extinct creatures. The program is both education with great facts about the evolution and lifestyle of these animals and features awesome animated recreations of their lives and all done in stunning 3D. If Attenborough's name is attached you are sure to have a great program and this great 3D documentary is no exception
