Solomon's screenplay treads a delicate line between wit and preciousness; at its weakest, Zwick's direction goes for the canned poignance of TV. Beut there's a lot to relish in this funny, bittersweet, sharply written comedy.

There is a great deal of sincerity in it, an attention to detail, a willingness to let characters be quirky and find their own ways without beating them over the head with the plot. But at the end we're left with a feeling of incompleteness.
