Malta Story is a decent film. It is about the island of Malta is attacked by the Germans but defended by the British. Alec Guinness and Jack Hawkins give good performances. The screenplay is slow in places. Brian Desmond Hurst did an alright job directing this movie. I liked this motion picture because of the adventure and drama.
Ambitious, but it fell short in the screenplay and direction. It's a shame because there was some good stuff here. It was a good time piece of WW2 and Malta.
Great Arial shots and even plane crash footage included here, tho a bit talky in the beginning.
The ever focused Alec Guinness brings gravity to the film after it's slow start.
a 100 minute film that seems much longer
Misfortune by geography to be smack in the middle of supply and trade routes since ancient times. That made it desirable real estate. Malta's been occupied by every conqueror operating in that area, most recently the British during World War II. At that time that island with its air and naval base was doing a lot of damage to Erwin Rommel's supply route in North Africa. With unbelievable courage the British garrison held on for over two years and was never really out of harm's way until the Allies took Sicily--A Mix of Cinematic Journalism and Romantic Love in a Threatened Little Island!!
A solid war movie showcasing the resilience of the Maltese, those stationed there and those sailing and flying to and from it. The use of locations still not rebuilt following the war lends authenticity and atmosphere to the piece. Alec Guiness and his co-stars turn in strong performances - all in all an interesting look at life on the island during wartime.
Detail rich war-mance highlighted by the incomparable Alec Guinness. Action packed WWII drama.
All the right elements seemed to be there, but this one never came together. It did have its moments though.
Uninteresting piece of ex post propaganda
Typical British stiff upper lip, but well acted by the great Guinness and Hawkins. Also very good use of actual wartime footage. Some dodgy effects but the story is good, so that's not a problem. Definitely worth watching if you're interested in WWII and/or classic British war films.
