A valuable, first-hand refugees' story.
The film also excels in the way it shows that middle-class liberals who make movies and run a café can lose everything in an instant.
Unlike a more conventional refugee documentary - shot by an outsider parachuting in - this is an intimate and ongoing study in which the family have complete agency, lending the film an additional ring of truth.
Fazili's musings when paired with the staggering imagery he collects of the family's journey gives human dimension to a migrant crisis so often only seen from a macro perspective, but then again that's why it feels like such a monumental undertaking.
Fazili doesn't lean that much on the hardships of the foursome's journey. There is plenty of that, yet also so much more.
"Midnight Traveler" puts a human face on the plight of migrants, and puts the lie to the hateful demonization of immigrants everywhere.
Midnight Traveler is a brutally honest film about the hardship and inhumanity a family endures and their bravery, love, hope, and, above all else, desire to control their own fate.
It's a powerful story that needs to be told.
This is cinema, and when it's over, though we rejoice at some kind of resolution, we miss our time with these fascinating, vibrant souls.
It's a remarkable achievement.
