A thrilling new documentary. Go to Full Review

Crunchiness aside, Racing to Zero is an interesting look at one aspect of the city's infrastructure with plenty of pleasant eyenoise in the footage of the trash-processing plants, even if it's sometimes marred by unneeded on-screen text. Go to Full Review

07/06/2015 I saw this at the 2015 Cleveland International Film Festival. This entertaining and educational hour long documentary reiterates the important lesson that we must Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle to take better care of our planet. Robert Haley, the Zero Waste Manger for the City of San Francisco is our guide, but there are many interesting and well-spoken people from around that city by the bay sharing information about each of their parts in the city-wide zero waste effort. When the city provides organized recycling pick-up as well as regular required compost pick-up, the amount of trash that ends up at the garbage dump is thankfully shrinking. I found the sections about electronics and clothing most eye-opening. Were you aware of the practice of burning unwanted electronics in third-world countries after removing the few precious bits of metal? Toxic fumes are causing serious health issues for many people working for slave-wages around the world. There is a better way to recycle the plastic and metal parts of computers. Also, were you aware that Goodwill thrift stores should take ANY textile materials even if filled with holes or stains or beyond repair? This film suggests that there is absolutely no reason for used drapes, towels, or clothing to ever be sent to a landfill. There are ways to recycle and reuse all types of fabric. After the film, audience members were energized and discussed the things they learned, and the ideas that were worth spreading to other cities. See more Read all reviews
