Horror fan 4 @Horrorfan4life Jun 12 While I love a movie about singers, especially country music singers I did find myself a little bored at times. I know Duvall won an Oscar and golden globe for his performance which was deserved I don't believe this is his best movie or performance. The ending was underwhelming and a little cheesy. I was engaged by this film and it’s implicitly, yet that there was more to this story than what was initially portrayed. It had a good cast and simple plot, but managed to keep me interested with its acting. Saw on box. Exquisite acting by Robert Duvall and the whole cast. One of the most interesting scenes is where Mac lies to his daughter about remembering a lullaby he used to sing to her. It was as if he were afraid of the close moment they could have shared if he had been honest and told her he remembered the lullaby. Such understated performances by all including Allan Hubbard whom was so believable as a little boy moving through life without his bio dad whom died so young he has no memories of him. Duvall deserved the Oscar also the song "Over you" was well written catchy. This is a short sweet film. It is a flawless, nuanced, lived in, subtle work of pure craftsmanship. Tess Harper is also outstanding and the cast is perfect. The writing here is wise, smart, haunting, beautiful and the music is glorious. Bruce Beresford has directed a lived-in emotional masterpiece.
