The Huntsman: Winter's War is visually arresting and boasts a stellar cast, but neither are enough to recommend this entirely unnecessary sequel. Read critic reviews

Rather decent mix of a prequel and sequel to the recent Snow white fantasy adventure. This is more of the same, an evil ruler, fantasy creatures, action, some humor (mostly thanks to dwarves). Nothing groundbreaking but pretty entertaining and well done. The film even manages to take a few rather unexpected turns before we reach the inevitable but pretty sweet happily ever after..

Marketed as a prequel (though it really isn't), The Huntsman: Winter's War is an action-packed fantasy adventure. It begins as an origin story, telling of how Eric was recruited and trained to be a huntsman for Freya, the queen of the north, but then it jumps forward several years to Queen Snow White tasking him with recovering Ravenna's magic mirror (which has been stolen) and taking it to a sanctuary where it's evil magic can be contained; but little does he know, Freya has learned of the mirror and wants its power for herself. Chris Hemsworth, Emily Blunt, Jessica Chastain, and Charlize Theron lead the cast and give strong performances. However, the storytelling is so trite and predictable that there's no real mystery or suspense. Still, the action is exciting and there's some fun comedy with the dwarves. While The Huntsman: Winter's War is a bit of a mess, it's entertaining and a step up from the previous film.

Entertaining, but slowly paced. There are plenty of references to Disney's Snow White story, but if you're expecting a Disney flick, you'll be disappointed. This is more of an action/adventure film (although surprisingly spare with the action and adventure). It's really not for kids. Great special effects and nice costumes dress up a somewhat formulaic script. Hemsworth is likable with a facile but puzzling Scottish brogue (I'm guessing it's Scottish -- there's no reason I could discern for any accent whatsoever). But great actresses are really the source of gravity in this film. Watch this film for the women -- not for the titular character, and you'll feel you got your money's worth.

The sequel that no one asked for, The Huntsman Winter's War makes its predecessor look like a great film (which is not a good thing). This film had the greatest cast in ages, the likes of Hemsworth, Chastain, Blunt and Theron. However not even their calibre could save this mess. The plot was forced, the script was uninventive and the characters were unlikeable. The effects however were good, and Theron makes a great villain.
