Critics Consensus

A surprisingly dark, emotional, and almost excessively cynical experience for Transformers fans.

Pat Graham Chicago Reader 05/18/2008
A 1986 computer-animated feature based on a popular TV cartoon show, further inspired, no doubt, by the philanthropic desire of Japanese and American toy manufacturers to keep their kiddie customers rolling in robots. Go to Full Review

The anime-inflected look is generally impressive too, although the power-rock soundtrack is unsalvageable. Go to Full Review

The film itself is fine from a narrative standpoint, entertaining enough for fans of the series, and bold in the choices that it takes. Go to Full Review

Adam W @RT70509460 5d I was born many, many years after movie came out, but I watch it. Its great, of course i was sad after they killed half of characters, this deaths scenes traumatise generation/ generations of kids. Now it backs to the cinemas to traumatise others, new generations of kids. See more Sam M @RT50629248 6d The movie Hasbro continues to go back to for expensive toys, constant re-releases in cinema and video along with in 2026 a new campaign to "apologize" for the characters killed off. This film was one of the few that shaped my appreciation for the brand and I've watched a good deal of times. The 86 film decides to go in a direction that no other film would moving forward; "86ing" most of its core cast of characters that the audience had grown accustomed to in 1984-1985. TF86 suffered from poor box office sales and its hard to think that the bad word of mouth from the death of Optimus Prime didn't play some sort of factor. I never saw this in theaters as I first owned a VHS copy and then bought a remastered digital one. I used to use YouTube videos to rewatch hype moments but Hasbro took them all down in prep for this 40 year re-release. For those who weren't, this is not just another cartoon movie. The story is well written for what it was based on. If you're new to the Transformers and need a crash course in learning about them, this is the one to watch. The rock heavy soundtrack alone makes this a must watch FYI. See more Przemyslaw S @sobol May 12 In short, the best animated Transformer movie, beats all the modern Transformers reboots too. There's surprising depth to the story, beautiful style, and great action scenes accompanied by an amazing soundtrack. I find it difficult to capture where the quality of this movie stands, but i feel full and inspired by the end credits. Autobots, roll out! See more Stephen C @bob25009 Mar 21 The worldwide gross is $5,900,000.00, less than the budget of $6,000,000.00. A success on home media. See more Read all reviews
