As the Allies prepare for the D-Day Invasion, a pigeon named Valiant (Ewan McGregor) wants to contribute to the war effort. With carrier pigeons being decimated by German falcon Von Talon (Tim Curry), the understaffed Royal Homing Pigeon Corps accepts pint-sized Valiant and his shady friend, Bugsy (Ricky Gervais). After surviving training, Valiant is sent on a dangerous assignment to rescue Mercury (John Cleese), a messenger bird taken prisoner by the Nazis.

I can't really tell you why, for a family flick revolving around WWII Carrier Pigeons it's an obvious gag, but just the idea of department devoted to crafting propaganda for pigeons gets me to smile and chuckle far more than it probably should. Set against the high stakes of May 1944, the film tells the story of a diminutive but determined carrier pigeon named Valiant, whose journey into conflict was inspired by the genuinely heroic true exploits of avian soldiers during World War II. Despite being the inaugural film in a four-picture deal between Disney and John H. Williams’ Vanguard Animation, and benefiting from an ambitious, two-year production schedule led by first-time director Gary Chapman, the project faced mixed critical reaction upon its release. Audiences were treated to a truly impressive voice cast, featuring Ewan McGregor as the lead alongside comedic giants like Ricky Gervais and John Cleese, musical talent from composer George Fenton, and the menacing tones of Tim Curry as the villainous General Von Talon. Valiant (2005) Valiant (2005) Rollo (voiced by Buckley Collum) and Charles De Girl (voiced by Sharon Horgan), two mice working in the French Resistance, assist their British allies on a mission to deliver information to the troops A fiery French resistance mouse named Rollo (pictured) assists members of the RHPS on their dangerous mission. A group of top flight messenger pigeons from the Royal Homing Pigeon Service - (l-r) Toughwood, Lofty, Valiant, Bugsy and Tailfeather - serve crown and country during World War II General Von Talon (center, voiced by Tim Curry), the dreaded pigeon-eating enemy falcon, and two of his henchmen (Underlingk, left and Cufflingk, right), keep a lookout for British operatives.
