Critic Reviews for Ash vs Evil Dead Season 1

All Critics (51) | Top Critics (20)

Watching the production come up with crazy kills and challenging set pieces is nearly as fun as hearing Ash's continuous wisecracking, making "Ash vs. Evil Dead" quite possibly the most fun you can find on television.

When old friends get back together, it's not surprising if they dwell on the past. Ash vs Evil Dead is nothing new, but everyone involved seems to be having such a good time that it's hard not to get pulled in.

I'm happy the producers of the upgrade made a very clear decision not to "upgrade" the proceedings too much. Things still feel tactile. When the buckets of blood pour, you can feel the stickiness.

With its quips, chainsaws and plenty of blood, I couldn't be happier

I can say that I found it all fairly amusing, as the material kept veering into cheap horror slapstick.

The bloody roots of Evil Dead are fully honored as well; it's doubtful there has ever been a more red-covered show in TV history. But the overarching goofiness of everything tempers any disgust factor.

No matter what, new Evil Dead is new Evil Dead and there's one word to describe that - groovy.

Oct 31, 2018 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

For Evil Dead disciples who've kept the faith all these years, the show is fun enough to make them rethink everything this franchise taught them about dead loved ones who show up on their doorstep, looking better than ever.

Insistent on sticking to the roots of old-school techniques over transitioning the series into something it is not, a.k.a. modern-day CGI and special effects.

Dec 3, 2017 | Rating: 5/5 | Full Review…

It's exactly as cheesy as it sounds, and do you know what? It's all the more glorious for it.

Ash vs. Evil Dead is the single greatest thing in the history of the universe. Sure, I may be saying that as a die-hard fan of Sam Raimi's Evil Dead film franchise-- a series that started in 1981, and ostensibly ended in 1992 (with a brief, notable continuation with 2013's intense and wonderful Evil Dead remake). And as such a fan, I may have been waiting to see Bruce Campbell's dimwitted zombie slayer Ash Williams make a return for, oh, over a DECADE or so. But even with the glossy sheen of nostalgia and brand recognition stripped away, Ash vs. Evil Dead is a crazy-fun, energized, blood-drenched carnival ride. It's everything that made the original films great, chopped up into neat, 30-minute increments and stretched out over five freaking hours. Screw an Evil Dead IV-- THIS is what we've all been waiting for! (more to come)

Slick and fun, Ash vs Evil Dead started off slowly but grew to be a successful spin off to the franchise.
