Bull: Season 1 (2016-2017)

Critic Consensus: Michael Weatherly's performance is top-notch, but not enough to save a show that relies too heavily on a well-worn series of legal show tropes and an off-putting premise.

Critic Reviews for Bull: Season 1

All Critics (23) | Top Critics (14)

If you're tired of high-concept dramas and serialized offerings that require far too much viewing time in your already jam-packed schedule, Bull is certainly a light, breezy offering that could help you unwind after a long Tuesday.

If Bull had been watching me watch, he'd have known I was inclined to vote the show guilty - of being thoroughly missable.

Weatherly is the here, the now and the only overriding reason to watch Bull. On his own or in the NCIS ensemble, his star quality is obvious and likely enough to carry Bull through a multi-season run.

I doubt it's possible for a CBS legal drama starring former NCIS player Michael Weatherly and debuting between NCIS and NCIS: Los Angeles not to be a hit.

Even Weatherly's most devoted fans may find this one a load of bull.

But wait! This is something different - it's about a trial consultant who advises clients about how to choose and influence a jury. If you think that's going to make this series something special, you may need some analysis of your own.

Audience Reviews for Bull: Season 1

Michael Weatherly stars in the CBS courtroom drama Bull, a fresh new series about trial science. Co-created by Dr. Phil McGraw (based on his early career) and executively produced by Steven Spielberg, the series follows psychologist Dr. Jason Bull as he and his team help clients select sympathetic juries and devise trial strategies that will win over those juries. A procedural, case-of-the-week series, the cases cover a variety of crimes from murder to financial scams to corporate theft. There's not a lot of character development for the main cast, but occasionally the writers use a case to explore some of the characters' backstories; such as Bull's failed marriage. And unfortunately most of the cases aren't all that dramatic or suspenseful, as they're geared more towards showing how Bull's team works. Still, Bull delivers a promising first season and its trial science angle gives it a unique perspective that raises it above the standard, run-of-the-mill courtroom drama.
