Shortly after thrusting Pangborn, an established hero from several novels and films, into a wintry new mystery, we get one of the most gruesome deaths Uncle Stevie never wrote.
Based on the first hour, is Castle Rock worth your time? Undoubtedly. There's a richness to this story that's sensed right off the bat, as is Abrams' penchant for "mystery box" storytelling.
It's the essence of King the show is after, and for the most part, it does a good job of focusing in on what makes his stories so memorable in the first place: the characters.
There's an idea buried here -- one about how to fight evil and vanquish it from the world -- that is remarkably compelling.
If "Severance" is any indication, it's not the diverse strands of the Stephen King Extended Universe that's holding this thing together: It's André Holland... He makes Castle Rock feel like a drama, not the haunted-house ride at the county fair.
