Most tourists like to visit popular sites and attractions, like beaches, stadiums and museums, while on vacation. There is a subset of tourism, however, that involves visiting places that are historically associated with death and tragedy. Journalist David Farrier focuses on that area of travel, known as dark tourism, in this docuseries. In each episode, Farrier travels to a different locale to visit destinations and have experiences that wouldn't be on most vacationers' bucket lists. He embeds himself in a death-worshipping cult in Mexico, sees tourists soaking up radiation left behind in Fukushima, meets vampires in New Orleans, and travels to the most-nuked place on Earth for atomic swimming and fishing.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Host David Farrier's empathetic curiosity keeps Dark Tourist from feeling too exploitative -- though shallow observations about its macabre destinations often leave something to be desired.

A compelling new docuseries aimed at those who like their vacations with an element of risk. Farrier is a plucky host, but he's not afraid to tell viewers when he senses he's made a terrible error in judgment. Go to Full Review

It feels a little sordid, as if the miseries of the world are mere fodder for some televisual equivalent of the thrills of extreme mountain biking. Go to Full Review

It's engrossing stuff, and those who warm to Farrier's style and interests can also check out his cult documentary, Tickled, on Netflix. Go to Full Review
James Delingpole The Spectator 12/18/2018
Farrier's travelogues are great -- especially when he relaxes, gives the story space and lets events take their own course rather than (as TV documentaries tend to do) follow a prearranged narrative. Go to Full Review

At its best, succeeds in blurring the line between real life and an episode of 'Black Mirror.' Go to Full Review

It's a great watch, and Farrier's much-loved schtick remains very much intact. Go to Full Review

Maka M Aug 11 Will make you question culture, morals and why you don't travel more. See more Vili V 10/20/2024 David Farrier can make the show feel like satire sometimes. I really love a moment in the 1st episode where Pablo Escobars ex-hitman, known as Popeye, answers beautifully to another instance of Davids tone-deaf condescension with a short speech about how people like David can never understand the crushing poverty and the violent dog-eat-dog world that Popeye was born into. For a second, I mistook Davids tone-deaf attitude for a brilliant journalistic move, for getting this great answer out of Popeye. David then of course immediately proceeds to straight up passive-aggressively insult the ex-hitman by offering to give him the number of his therapist. I almost spit out my drink. I have to give some stars just because it's kinda funny to watch David have the massive balls to be a snarky condescending little twerp to an infamous narco hitman. But the show is not funny, unintentionally or otherwise, often enough to justify watching it as a satiric comedy show, and it's too shallow to justify watching it as a serious documentary. See more 06/24/2022 David Farrier offers a shallow and often tone-deaf glimpse at the "dark" parts of the world. He views tragedy and obscure local customs as nothing more than curios, and seems incapable of taking anything seriously. See more 03/09/2022 David Farrier' is a little self-righteous millennial byotch. Im watching the Pablo Escobar episode, and he's passing judgement on "Popeye", a guys who was around when he wasn't even alive. David is the typical pretentious compassionate caring clueless attention-seeking ilk, like the rest of his newer generation. Who the F do you think you are? Had you been a little more impartial while dressed your pink patterned shorts and blouse, this would be interesting. You're an A hole. FYI, "Popeye" is far more interesting than you, and more real and honest, genuine. Arrogant and condescending, David is full-blown the sign of the times and his generation and darkness we are in. But, keep watching, there is some actually interesting stuff despite David. All in all, David Farrier is obnoxious, appeals to the typical younger generation I get it. Which is sad, because he really goes to some cool historic places and people, and is just kind of insulting overall. See more scott d @ScottD569 04/29/2021 A weak Louis Theroux rip off, absolutely terrible with all the normal .UK.GOV biases - a complete waste of time. Go to YouTube to find guys who can do this kind of unorthodox travel show without the mind numbing BBC style politics! AVOID!!!! See more 03/27/2021 This is an incredible show with an incredible host. Some reviews here are there seemingly at random will rag on David Ferrier, but without ever saying anything specific as to why they don't like him. I find him to be empathetic, very intelligent, and quite an interesting and quirky person - yet these criticisms that are vague, seem to take issue. Perhaps they're upset about something outside of the show. As it stands, a great show that deserves another season See more Read all reviews
