Hollander and Front aside, the acting was mostly inadequate, and when it wasn't inadequate it was out of control. Go to Full Review

Doctor Thorne is lively and satirical, with tongue-in-cheek humor throughout. Go to Full Review

The role of the Ugly American is played with such radiance by Community graduate Alison Brie that you'll pray she lives long enough to spend her golden years killing [Downton] Abbey's Dowager Countess with kindness. Go to Full Review

Doctor Thorne... feels solidly competent rather than inspired. Go to Full Review
Sarah Doran Radio Times 05/03/2017
Doctor Thorne was the ideal dose of predictable period drama. In fact, it almost felt like the antidote to the death, despair and desolation that came to characterise later series of Fellowes' own Downton Abbey. Go to Full Review

Sure, it's the usual standard period drama stuff - heirs, marriage matches, money and love played out in picturesque places. But it's nice enough. Go to Full Review

03/07/2021 It's gratifying to see everyone get their just rewards. See more 06/29/2017 Terrific, if a tad formulaic - a worthy Downton Abbey sequel (different characters) from Julian Fellowes - and with even more beautiful scenery exquisitely framed by Jan Jonaeus, a name not known heretofore. However, we don't need Fellowes hosting the episodes like Masterpiece's old Alistair What's-His-Name. Stefanie Martini makes a nice debut that will launch her career as a leading lady. Alison Brie plays something of the "Downton" Elizabeth McGovern role, an American in lords & ladies'land. She speaks an interesting Fellowes line: "I'd like a man who thinks like a gentleman, but whether he is one or not doesn't matter much to me." In the end, you'll see ... !! See more 02/26/2017 Great series ... Let down by the ever present background music that was both annoying and completly off putting. See more 06/29/2016 Filmed awkwardly, especially with the cuts during conversations, and robotic acting, including glances towards the queue cards in almost every scene. The score doesn't match the mood, and does nothing to improve the unnatural dialogue, or delivery of the lines. Not worth the time. Would not recommend. See more 05/22/2016 It's a short series so you don't have to rearrange your whole weekend, if you into that sort of thing. It's very fast moving with good acting, but it lacks intensity. I never for one moment doubted that things would turn out for all parties. What I liked most was the pre and post episode commentary by Mr. Fellows. It reminded me of Alistair Cooke.
