Critic Consensus: While "The Zygon Inversion" isn't the most compelling conclusion to a Doctor Who two-parter, it allows for a stirring performance by Capaldi while hinting at Clara's fate in the episodes to come.

Critic reviews for The Zygon Inversion
On the basis of "The Zygon Inversion," I'm now ready to call it: Series 9 is the best season of Doctor Who yet. Hands down.
Today, the four principal characters all get a good chunk of the action, each showing a side of themselves we're not used to.
Capaldi can make the most writerly lines sound natural, a talent upon which this episode made great demand.
"The Zygon Inversion" deserves major props for taking a seemingly standard aliens-invade plotline (even with the added resonance of the War on Terror) and turning it, essentially, into a treatise about war and its ultimate uselessness.
In fact, it was a very thoughtful, interesting hour that gave us much to ponder and gave Capaldi a chance to really shine.
