What to Know

Critics Consensus

Foundation's big-budget production and impressive performances are a sight to behold, but it struggles to wrangle the behemoth that is its source material into a fully satisfying series.

As with all good sci-fi, Foundation gives you plenty to chew on -- and the chewing has only just begun. Go to Full Review

It would be enjoyable if they had a bit more fun with it, but watching it felt like I was in a meeting. Go to Full Review

By keeping the audience at arm's length, Foundation also makes it that much harder to connect with any of the characters, despite some solid performances from the entire cast. Go to Full Review

This series is what all science fiction shows should use as their standard. The scope of the story telling, the production value, and character performances are all outstanding. Go to Full Review

Foundation season 1 is a highly compelling piece of sci-fi that has some magnificent visual effects. Lee Pace, and Jared Harris light up the show with their commanding character portrayals. Go to Full Review

Some of the worlds we visit are pulled right from the pages of Tekhnika Molodezhi... But this world building does produce long ponderous scenes, and pace can be an issue at times in the screenplay from show runners David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman. Go to Full Review

In F @Milim Sep 2, 2026 Pourquoi vous n'allez pas relire votre bouquin au lieu de venir descendre cette superbe série ? See more Isuf E @istok011 Aug 14, 2026 The show on its own is quite a good one, but putting Asimov's name on the label, is not just disappointing, it's insulting. If you think that by watching the show you would have some grasp on the book's, they are just not there. See more Jason R @RT57354571 Aug 8, 2026 The best sci-fi show I have ever seen. Made me want to read Asimov's books. See more Nathan L @NatronBomb Aug 4, 2026 I was really excited (at first) to see this was being made. But it was a disappointment, as a huge fan of the original books. The Foundation novels were some of my very first scifi stories that I read at a young age, which got me addicted to the genre. The only reason I'm not giving a rating lower than I am, is that many of the actors are very good at their acting, and the cinematography is often very well done (in the first 2 seasons). There's no doubt there's some major talents involved, but the story has been neutered. I've seen criticism of the novels as being too much just "old white men in rooms talking about politics", and that they're supposed trying to "fix" that here. But they've completely missed the point of the books. Instead of focusing on the large scale, they make everything about individuals for the sake of the drama. It felt condescending. See more Christopher C @RT59638650 Aug 2, 2026 Season 1 starts out strong, then careens off a freaking cliff. The best part of the show is the Empire and Cleon clones plot. The Cleons are by far the most compelling characters to watch. Gaal's story was interesting for the first half, but by the time Salvor gets introduced it's like the writers completely used up any of their good ideas and took inspiration from George Lucas for dialogue. Good God, the writing of the second half of season 1 was some of the worst I've ever seen for big budget sci-fi television. Practically none of the decisions made by anyone makes any sense. I could barely finish the final episode. It's a master class in how not to do a plot progression. I am just barely going to give season 2 a chance since the consensus is that it is an improvement. See more Mr B @Balstice Jul 1, 2026 An absolute top-drawer scifi series! Probably the best I've ever seen. Great story, great actors, great effects, and no cheesy jokes or gratuitous sexual content. I'm thankful to have never read the book(s) because that always seems to be the kiss off death for viewers who can't get past tv adaptations. Kudos to Apple for getting it right. Now they just need to keep it going without destroying it. Keep the marketing people away. Any bets, lol? See more Read all reviews
