It turns out a well-crafted drama about the quest for power in Washington is always relevant no matter who is actually sitting in the White House.

Enjoying this show going forward may mean divorcing it from the national entertainment of the moment-politics-and instead reveling in its scene-to-scene sneakiness.

A good start after last season's erratic finish.

The bleakest (yet somehow still extremely fun to watch) season of the show yet.

I'm not sure if House of Cards renders President Trump's rise more understandable as a historical reality, but historical reality has certainly made season five's arcs more relatable.

There is definitely something radical about seeing a bisexual president of the United States, although he is closeted during his time in office.

Season five of "House of Cards" is some of the best we've seen from Netflix's premier Original series.

This is an intricate tapestry new co-showrunners Melissa James Gibson and Frank Pugliese are weaving... and while the season as a whole may be slightly over-filled with story, it's nevertheless as ruthless as we've come to expect.

...after a couple of seasons where House Of Cards shuffled the pack and confusingly brought too many players to the table, the focus is now firmly back on Spacey and the equally compelling Robin Wright as the ultimate political power couple.

It's working harder than ever to stay relevant -- which makes it feel the opposite.

Overall the season was fine, but in the age of quality programming across the board, the flaws are far more obvious.

It must have looked like great theatre on the page, but on screen it came across as overblown and silly. Was this the moment the pride of Netflix, a pioneer in the world of subscription TV, jumped the shark?

Audience Reviews for House of Cards: Season 5

  • Aug 17, 2020
This season is dreadful; it has spoiled the whole series for me. What was once a very compelling and intricate political drama, so well crafted, gave place to an implausible and nonsensical series of events, without cause and effect, very silly and completely detached from reality.
  • Apr 08, 2019
At this point, the show is out of good ideas and writing material. The show started as a serious political drama, now it borders between idiotic and nonsensical while still taking itself seriously.
  • Feb 06, 2019
Way too much moving away from Kevin Spacey's storyline.
  • Dec 31, 2018
I don't know how this show could get any better!
  • Dec 29, 2018
The power struggle between Frank and Claire hits an all-time high in S5 as the dark, political drama begins to mirror real-life politics while Robin Wright emerges as the show's main star.
  • Sep 20, 2018
This could have easily been the final season, and problems aside I think this story has run it's course.
  • Sep 11, 2018
This season has no added value for the viewer. There are no new interesting plots & twists that could turn arounds show, even though for obvious reasons there won't be Kevin Spacey in the final season. The characters lack of passion or maybe more suitably - ambition. Maybe cast is also bit bored with the serie. Francis became cartoonish. Claire continues pointless relationship with the writer. Main opposition in Will Conway lacks determination to dethrone the Underwoods. From the very beginning its difficult to drown into the plot. In the middle of 6th episode I lost the patience & hope of overturning this boring drama. Yes, it's simply boring. Only for the diehard fanbase.

Jumped the shark. Absolutely ridiculous season. Not even slightly interested in the next season. Felt this way even before KS turned out to be a jerk. What a shame. Loved it in the beginning.
  • Dec 30, 2017
1st season still is THE best one
  • Dec 16, 2017
Puntaje Original: 7.6 De momento, la temporada más sombría de la serie. Una impactante y poderosa trama que te atrapa de inicio a fin, conectando con los personajes y ansiando conocer su destino. Una temporada que no descepcionará.
