Lorena Bobbitt became a household name in 1993 when she cut off her husband's penis. She became the butt of jokes as her story became a fixture on cable news. Twenty-five years after the case of Lorena and John Bobbitt, executive producer Jordan Peele reinvestigates the story that made headlines around the world. "Lorena" explores vital moral issues and the missed opportunity for a national discussion about domestic violence and sexual assault that surrounded the scandal. The four-part series, which looks back at the trial and the media coverage of it, includes interviews with the Bobbitts as they look back at the newsmaking incident a quarter-century earlier.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Fascinating and frustrating, Lorena's ample footage and fresh perspective on a long-mocked moment provide welcome context and vindication to the woman at its center -- even if its reenactments don't quite measure up.

While the documentary fully explores these many intersecting pieces, there's one aspect of Lorena's case that I wished were discussed more..Because Lorena came to this country without her family, it left her isolated and without shelter or safety... Go to Full Review

Lorena is a fine, highly researched example of the way that documentary makers, with the benefit of hindsight, are re-evaluating the way identity issues like gender, race, religion and class played out during the recent past as prejudiced tabloids... Go to Full Review

Patrick F 05/13/2024 This is a good documentary series. It is one of the most comprehensive documentaries about a single event I have ever seen. Four almost feature length episodes tell the complete story of one of the 1990's most salacious scandals. Expertly edited with present day interviews, archival news footage and interviews, and archival courtroom footage. This series tells more than the story of John and Lorena Bobbitt. It is an expose on the epidemic of domestic violence in America and also an examination of how the media responds to such stories. My only complaint about the series is that it was almost too comprehensive. It was a lot to get through. I probably would have enjoyed a two hour feature than four 1 hour episodes. That being said, it is a well done film. See more Patrick F 02/03/2023 This is a good documentary series. It is one of the most comprehensive documentaries about a single event I have ever seen.
