What to Know

Critics Consensus

With performances by father-son duo Kurt and Wyatt Russell that work a charm, Monarch adds a welcome wrinkle to the Godzilla legacy by honing its monstrous scope to a very human level.

All the interpersonal stuff seems rather… well, small compared to the existence of walking, dinosaur-shaped atomic bombs. Go to Full Review

It’s more than a little underwhelming to have an episode teeing up a future plot development that’s ultimately not that interesting, especially when the human drama around it isn’t the best Monarch can do. Go to Full Review

While this spin-off series has to accommodate a recent blockbuster revival of Godzilla movies, it does a good job of establishing its own identity. Go to Full Review

Honestly, this show is unpredictable in so many ways, not always in good ways, but it keeps you guessing and really keeps you wanting more. Go to Full Review

Monarch uses its two timelines to fill the screen with more: more music, more plot, and more characters. Very little of it is good. Go to Full Review

I wish this was two separate seasons. I really do. Because now, instead of one fantastic Godzilla show and one middling to decent one, we have a series that comes to life only long enough to frustrate the audience. Go to Full Review

Noelle K. @noelle3834 2d All shows and movies now have to go by the Hollywood DEI standard. Anything you watch will now have an included LGBTQ narrative. I stopped watching when the Asian girl was a lesbian. Sorry don't want this thrown in my face EVERY TIME!!! And for kids.... really AppleTV? See more Dennis S. @RT64221550 5d Overall, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is a well-executed addition to the MonsterVerse. The biggest issue is the pacing — the multiple storylines and frequent flashbacks sometimes make the story feel stretched out and slower than it needs to be. That said, the final few episodes really help bring everything together and make the buildup worthwhile. The production quality is a major highlight, with the budget clearly well spent on the Titan sequences, visual effects, and especially the sound design, which gives the monsters a truly massive presence. It’s a more character-driven take on the MonsterVerse, and while the journey can feel slow at times, the payoff makes it worth watching. See more Rager_Fox T @RT77274323 May 30 So I'm watching this because of my son and he told me it was going to be good. I'm glad I'm getting the 7 day free trial of this because it is slop, it is also hate against men. It is the most boring slop I have ever seen, I feel like it is a task to watch, I find my self reaching for my phone instead of wanting to watch this. The black girl is a super genius and also must be CIA because she holds passports from different countries and knows her way around a computer which we know is not realistic, the men are all unsmart who can't do a single thing without needing help from a woman. I'm honestly watching to see where this 5h!7 will end, but truthfully I'd rather watch Spider-Noir again. Some people like it, who knows, maybe if I keep watching this slop will get better, but for now on the third episode and I feel like I'm at the dentist getting all my teeth pulled out. Also I'm not supposed to write profanity in this review and I have no idea which word is profanity. See more delaSarge S @RT92437873 May 29 Somewhere in the first season one of the main characters says that the whole situation feels like a sequel to The Goonies. I agree...... See more Jupp G @Grabi May 27 Monarch: Legacy of Monsters could be a great show. The monster VFX look amazing and the lore is fascinating. The casting of Kurt and Wyatt Russell is brilliant. Unfortunately, the execution is ruined by constant, frustrating time jumps. Just when a storyline gets interesting, it cuts to another decade. This back-and-forth kills the pacing and breaks all tension. It feels like two different shows mashed together. If they had stuck to one timeline, this would be top-tier. Instead, it is just a frustrating waste of potential. See more Kara K @KaraK May 25 I am here for the monster viewing, I enjoy the way the series illustrates the monster characters, great CGI, okat cast. The weak and slightly cringey script is the only downside. Will probably continue to season 2. See more Read all reviews
