Critic Consensus: Strong narrative and performances make up for stagnant pacing in "The Gathering," an episode that meaningfully invests in the compelling relationship between two Outlander characters.

Critic reviews for The Gathering
I was disappointed by how easily Claire backed down from her plan... I wish the writers played it out so that the scene fell more in line with her character.
This episode really shows one of the strengths of the series in that it subtly and effectively, layers this relationship [Claire and Dougal] via unpredictable circumstances that arise throughout.
"The Gathering" started out as what I thought would be my least favorite episode of Outlander so far yet ended up becoming the pivot point of the show for me.
This is one of those episodes reminding us that Outlander is not at all interested in getting to the good stuff.
