Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant star in this Netflix-original series as married realtors, Sheila and Joel, who are living a quiet life, raising their teenage daughter in Santa Clarita, Calif. Their world unexpectedly changes when Sheila goes through a dramatic transformation that sends her down a road of death and destruction -- but leaves her looking and feeling better than ever. Barrymore and Olyphant also serve as executive producers, alongside showrunner and creator Victor Fresco ("Better Off Ted").

If Santa Clarita Diet is going to succeed with self-awareness, it needs to give Joel and Sheila as many honest, joke-breaking scenes as their daughter (Abby still feels like the only real character on the show), and it needs to amp up the insanity. Instead, I found a pleasant but surprisingly simple series that rarely made me laugh. Drew Barrymore is likable and clearly enjoys Sheila’s transformation, while Timothy Olyphant is the strongest element, bringing panic, nervous energy and excellent chemistry to their strange but affectionate marriage. The suburban zombie premise has potential, but the humor soon becomes repetitive: polite conversations about murder, Joel panicking, Sheila acting casually and enormous amounts of blood. The mythology grows without becoming much more interesting, and several storylines feel stretched. It is not a bad show, but the huge reputation created expectations it never came close to meeting.
