The disappearance of former college acquaintance Chantal leads several 20-somethings to get entangled in the mystery of how she went missing. Leading the search party is Dory, a lifelong doormat who works as a rich housewife's assistant. Dory makes it her personal mission to find Chantal -- and she's bringing her friends into the investigation with her. Self-diagnosed narcissist Elliott, who puts his ego aside long enough to agree to help Dory, is particularly good at detective work. Bubbly actress Portia excels at chatting up suspects for information because of her desperate need to be in the spotlight. Sheltered-but-sweet doofus Drew has to grow a spine to help solve the mystery and save his deteriorating relationship with Dory. Dory's ex-boyfriend Julian seeks the truth, regardless of who it hurts, because of his background as a journalist.

Search Party manages to become an addiction. It's a fascinating and often ferocious take on contemporary love, friendship, fame and delusion. And yet it has heart, as Dory remains an intensely compelling character. Go to Full Review

The metamorphosis worked for a number of reasons. On the level of storytelling, the central characters-incapable as they were of any actual growth-stayed remarkably consistent, retaining their young-Brooklynite insecurities even amid the cultists... Go to Full Review

The fifth and final season of Search Party is, frankly, bananas. It takes a ridiculous, ballsy, massive swerve, keeping the same familiar characters but plunging them into a quasi-alt-universe version of the Brooklyn they had previously inhabited. Go to Full Review

What started off as a Lynchian mystery ends in a completely different style... The series knows how to reinvent itself, sometimes in really wild ways, and becomes something truly surprising and original. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

The fifth season...throws caution to the wind and embraces multiple storylines pulled from popular fiction, all wrapped up in a candy-colored explosion. Go to Full Review

Jay C. @suifuun2 Jan 20 This is one of those rare few generational spectacles. A story that I can truthfully say I have never seen unfold like this before, and yet that at once felt incredibly warm & familiar. Season 5 culminates in one of best endings for a television show ever, and one of the best zombie origin stories I've ever seen. See more Kevin H 04/30/2024 Worst final season ever. You thought Game of Thrones jumped the shark? HA! See more Corey W 02/15/2023 Across five seasons of Search Party only one thing has remained the same: the fact that each season promises to be a different tone than the previous one. The mystery, the coverup, the trial, and the kidnapping. It has stayed true to that one constant here in season five as well, but the increasing weight of the absurd plot has finally made this project succumb to its own bizarre narrative. In doing so the performances, most of which are quite good, seem squandered because the story is just so much larger than life that it can't be connected to in any meaningful way. These characters are simply not who they once were, but they're also not who they were at the start of the season either and with just ten episodes these swings in personality feel unearned. But the core team is still comprised of some solid actors and there are moments in the mayhem that point to decent joke writing and even better character acting. Season five occurs after Dory (Alia Shawkat) nearly died following the events of her kidnapping by Chip (Cole Escola). It so happens that, technically, Dory did die but only for thirty-seven seconds. She awakens with a new sense of purpose and a more enlightened outlook. But her friends can see the mania in her eyes and the way she talks in fast bursts of hyperbolic nonsense. They decide, rightfully, to refer her to be admitted to a psychiatric institution. From this premise the season devolves into Dory escaping said institution and teaming up with a big pharma Elon Musk type by the name of Tunnel Quinn (played by the always excellent Jeff Goldblum). Quinn convinces Dory to help him make a pill that will enlighten the user without the years of practice and focus typically required to reach such a goal. The plot simply gets crazier from there with a final three episodes that transcend the term "jumping the shark." Season five tries to do so much that it doesn't let any of its cogent points land. Any of these introspections could have helped salvage the season had the showrunners decided to stop and explore them, but instead the whole thing is a race to the disappointing end. But the core performances are so realized that it's not all bad. Alia Shawkat, John Reynolds, Meredith Hanger, and John Early are all as good as they've ever been, even when the writing has their characters doing things without adequate reason. It's another example of a show overstaying its welcome by not knowing how to grow when it didn't really need to. Seasons one through three were really a triumph of comedic acting and writing, but the addition of the last two seasons will unfortunately taint what was once considered a "must-watch" for the thirty and under crowd. If you've watched this far it might be worth tuning in if only to give the main cast their due, but otherwise it proves hard to recommend. See more Terence D @TDuffy 01/31/2023 Well, the series started off strong season one through four were entertaining and made you want to watch the next season. Season five is completely different and quite stupid actually. I recommend the series to my friends now I wish I could take it back!!! OMG it's terrible See more joey r @joeyryan3133 12/28/2022 I honestly really enjoyed the first 3 seasons of this show however the 4th really fell in quality and the 5th is laughably bad. It's so disappointing because Alia Shawkrat's acting throughout this show has been phenomenal. There was a real opportunity that could have been had with her complete break from reality due to her trauma but for some reason they decided to make a zombie apocalypse the actual ending of the show. See more darrell m 08/28/2022 Great and funny actors. Well written. Crazy and fun storylines. But most of all, FUN See more Read all reviews
